One of Australia's most expensive suburbs was rocked by an early morning car theft witnessed by both the shocked owner and police.

Police carried out patrols in Wolseley Crescent near Point Piper, in Sydney's eastern suburbs, shortly before 4am on Thursday.

Officers spotted an abandoned black Ford utility with the engine still running.

While police were investigating the abandoned vehicle, officers spotted a blue VW Golf leaving a nearby driveway.

A resident ran out of the home and alerted police that their car had just been stolen.

“When police attempted to stop the VW it failed to stop and a pursuit commenced, but this was ended a short time later due to safety concerns,” a NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed.

A shocked resident told Daily Mail Australia they woke up to find a large presence on the street considered one of Australia's swankiest.

The major show of force by officers came in response to reports that several vehicles had been stolen from a number of homes.

An investigation was launched and following further investigation, another resident on nearby Wentworth Street reported that their vehicle had also been stolen overnight.

The police are investigating whether the two robberies are related.

Police are urging anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam relating to any of the incidents to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Wolseley Crescent is considered one of Australia's best streets with breathtaking waterfront mansions bordering Sydney Harbor with world-class views and selling for up to $38 million.
