A MAJOR discount retailer with 800 stores has permanently closed one branch.

Poundland in North Street, Brighton, closed its doors for the final time on Saturday with signs on the doors now telling shoppers the store is permanently closed.

Those looking to buy homewares and DIY items at a discount will now have to shop elsewhere.

In recent weeks, Poundland Brighton has been selling items at 75 per cent off the normal price as it tries to get as much stock as possible.

On Saturday the shelves were empty and you could see the staff removing items from the store.

One fan said: “I’m not surprised there’s one down the street and one 10 minutes away.”

Another said: “I got some good bargains there the other day, I actually paid a quid for things.”

While a third said: “Only one shop now. A few years ago there were five in Brighton.”

The nearest Poundland branches are in Western Road and London Road.

It is the second store in Poundland to close this year, after a store at the Bay View Center in Colwyn Bay, Wales, closed on January 5.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: “The store closed on February 24 as we were unfortunately unable to renew the lease.

“It goes without saying that in these circumstances we are working hard to find other opportunities for colleagues and we have two other stores nearby.

The little-known store hailed as ‘the slightly more upmarket Poundland’, packed with bargains

“We look forward to welcoming customers to the London Road and Western Road stores, both of which are a short walk away. They both have a much wider range than we could accommodate on North Street.”

Poundland also closed its branch in the Chineham Shopping Center near Basingstoke on New Year’s Eve.

Elsewhere, Poundland is said to be downing the shutters of its site in the Sailmakers Shopping Centre, Ipswich.

But Pepco-owned Poundland announced it would open 75 stores by Christmas.

In October, this concerned 71 former Wilko locations after his rival fell in government.

In December, Poundland boss Austin Cooke said the retailer had experienced “great” trading at the acquired former Wilko sites.

He added: “People are very happy that we are opening in their cities.

“You can’t deny that times are tough for many and the cost of living is having an impact, but it only gives us more and more reason to provide excellent value.”

Meanwhile, a man collecting chocolate from a bin outside a Poundland has insisted it tastes better “when it’s free”.

He regularly goes “dumpster diving”, as it is called in the United States, near British shops, and uploads videos of his catches to his social media pages.

Shoppers have also taken to Poundland to get their hands on Fabulosa’s £1 dupes that ‘smell exactly like’ Sol De Janeiro’s £22 cult cream.

Nothing screams summer more than the iconic Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Cheirosa 62 mist – and if you love lathering your body with it, you’ll be happy to know that you can now cover your house with it too.
