I’m a former FA Cup winner, but I’ve also been on the wrong side of a massive killing spree

STEVE Ogrizovic says he has had the ‘best and worst’ the FA Cup has to offer.

The former Coventry City goalkeeper won Wembley in 1987 when the Sky Blues defeated Tottenham.

But less than two years later he found himself on the receiving end of one of the league’s biggest shocks when the Sky Blues were defeated by then non-League club Sutton United.

As if that wasn’t enough, Ogrizovic was the club’s goalkeeping coach when Worcester City beat Coventry in the cup almost a decade ago.

Last season he commented on local radio as then National League side Wrexham defeated Coventry in a third round thriller.

Tonight, Mark Robins’ side could make it to the quarter-finals or they could suffer again from uncompetitive opposition.

Ogrizovic knows all too well what is at stake when National League South side Maidstone come to the CBS Arena looking to pull off another upset following their win at Ipswich Town.

Coventry legend Ogrizovic said: “You don’t need me to tell you how dangerous non-league teams are. Maidstone will play like crazy because non-league sides always do.

‘Make no mistake, they deserve to be here too. Coventry will have to do absolutely everything they can to ensure they are not embarrassed again.

‘I’ve tried to put Sutton out of my mind. David Phillips scored and we had a lot of chances.

“It doesn’t help at all that it was on Match of the Day. There the whole world can see it.

“But I have to give credit where it’s due, Sutton was excellent on the day.

‘Worcester was a different country. But I was there again. Looks like I have my fingerprints all over a lot of this, doesn’t it? The good and the bad.

“Lee Burge was sent off and we lost 2-1. It was a difficult moment at a pretty terrible time for the club.

“Wrexham was a bit different. They may have been non-competitive at the time, but their squad was full of seasoned professionals who had competitive experience.

“But I’ve had the best and the worst that the FA Cup has to offer.

“There used to be nothing like winning the FA Cup. There was little difference between winning the league and the FA Cup, it was very prestigious.

“It’s lost a bit of the glamor now, but you have to balance it with the profile you get if you win it, and that’s huge.”

Coventry’s preparations for the tie did not go to plan on Friday as they were defeated 3-0 by play-off rivals Preston.

Ogrizovic added: “The Maidstone game is tricky because the whole world – apart from the Coventry fans – wants them to get through it.

“Mark Robins and No2 Aidy Viveash will allow nothing but total respect for Maidstone.

“They will treat the game like it’s a championship game.”
