Prince William expressed his desire to write to three women who were held captive in Ariel Castro’s house of horrors in Ohio for 10 years from 2003 to 2013.

The Prince of Wales felt compelled to correspond with the kidnap victims after it emerged how they watched his wedding to Kate Middleton in April 2011 and said it had ‘lifted their spirits’.

Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus were held captive for 10 years after Castro locked them in his Cleveland home.

The women were rescued in 2013, with Berry and DeJesus later giving an interview to the BBC in 2015.

Berry told how she watched the royal wedding, with the event providing a brief respite from her horrific ordeal, which saw her raped up to five times a day and held in heavy chains, leaving her skin cut and bleeding.

Berry, who gave birth to a child by her captor while she was held hostage, shared her love of the royal wedding.

During the interview, with DeJesus by her side, Berry explained, “It was the biggest thing on all the news channels, you know, and I liked watching the news to know what was going on in the world.”

“I actually set my clock and got up at six. For me, that was just something that… I don’t know, it was luck. They got married. And to see what her dress looked like and to see all the people there, it was just beautiful,” she added.

When asked about her thoughts on the Duchess’s dress, she commented: ‘I think it could have been a little more chic. She’s a princess!’

A week after the interview with the kidnap victims was broadcast, William wrote a letter to the BBC asking for details of the three women so he could write to them.

The details of Prince William reaching out to the women were shared by interviewee Kirsty Wark, presenter of Newsnight.

“It was humbling to interview them. They said they had watched William and Kate’s royal wedding there on television. A week later I received a letter from Prince William asking if he could write to the girls. That was amazing,” Wark told the BBC Radio times.

‘Stories like this are both terrible and wonderful. Amanda Berry had a baby through rape, when she was only six years old. In that concrete basement she made drawings of the outside world, the streets, for her child.’
