Ferdinand stressed that during his 12 years at Man Utd, the players would determine the intensity of training and push each other.

The six-time Premier League winner said: “The standards were important when I was here.

“We used to have Paul Scholes who set the standards. He was the best every day.”

When asked which players drive their teammates from the current selection, Ten Hag answers: “Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez.

“Licha, when he is on the training field, he is always in the foreground.

“They set the tone so they can hold others.”

Ferdinand was pleased to hear about the culture at Carrington and said: “It’s so refreshing to hear him talk about the training ground and standards.

‘Norms, standards, standards. That’s one of the things he kept harping on about: standards.”
