During the conversation, in collaboration with Sky betwhich also featured Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Jill Scott, Solskjaer reflected on his time in the Old Trafford dugout.

Referring to the inconsistency seen by current boss Erik ten Hag from his side, Solskjaer said: “I’ve been there.

“It’s that consistency again: if you play well for a while you don’t know what you’re going to get and that’s the worst thing for a manager.

“If you don’t know what you’re going to get from your team, it’s terrible.

“That’s why when you have Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic, you have players who you know will give you seven, eight out of ten every time.

“They’re going to give you everything. That’s the best feeling.”

At this point Keane interjected: “Fred? Seven, eight…?”

He then made a face of mock disgust as he added, “I’m not sure about that.”

Unperturbed, Solskjaer continued: “I really liked him in midfield, his legs. They needed those legs in midfield.”

At that moment, Keane picked up his friend’s glass and appeared to inspect it.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals he has turned down several job offers as ex-Man Utd boss names conditions for return

Fred, 31, left Man Utd for Fenerbahce last summer after five years at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian’s last game for United came in last season’s FA Cup final.

During the match he committed a foul on Kevin De Bruyne, leading to Ilkay Gundogan’s winner.

Appearing as a pundit for ITV at the time, Keane ranted: ‘Fred had Kevin De Bruyne where he wanted him. De Bruyne stands with his back to the goal and then Fred makes a mistake on him.

‘It’s the height of stupidity. But we’ve seen that so many times from him over the years.’

During his appearance on the show, Solskjaer also reminisced about Man Utd’s decision to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo in 2021.

The Norwegian said: “When I was manager of Manchester United, I don’t remember so many problems from Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It was the game against Everton when he walked off the pitch straight away after I came on as a substitute, but there were more problems with him after I left the club.

“I had a good relationship with Cristiano and there is a lot of respect between us. I think he handled his disappointments very well when I was there.
