Royal fans share disappointment about reduced balcony

Royal fans are disappointed with the sparse Buckingham Palace balcony at this year’s Trooping the Color – after just 14 family members showed up yesterday compared to 40 four years ago.

Those who love The Firm say they miss seeing so many members of the family come together – and have labeled yesterday’s slimmed-down balcony as “boring.”

Last year 17 members – and the late Queen – attended, but this year’s balcony was missing the children of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, James, Earl of Wessex and Lady Louise Windsor.

James, 15, and Lady Louise, 19, also appeared on the balcony for the coronation last month.

In 2019, more than 40 members of the royal family had gathered on the balcony, longing for the iconic flypast

Also absent from Trooping the Color this year was Princess Alexandra, 86, a cousin of the late Queen.

This year, only 14 royals were on the balcony – a stark contrast to 2019, where more than 40 royals laughed together, excited to watch the flypast.

A royal fan shared the two images on Twitter, writing: ‘So sad that the balcony performance after #TroopingtheColour will be so predictable from now on.

“I loved looking closely at the balcony photos to see who was there and who wasn’t.

‘It is so unnecessary and boring that this beautiful tradition is now gone!’

Another person replied to the thread saying, ‘Could totally agree! If the Christmas walk can include the whole family, why not Trooping the Color?

“I miss the camaraderie & the togetherness & the celebration.”

A third wrote: ‘It’s a pity, but things can change with the next generation (e.g. William’s grandchildren all included)’.

Another person tweeted, “Lots of complaints about the balcony today at #TroopingtheColour, because of this the kings have slimed down the working royals.

“I can see William getting his nephews involved once he becomes king, he is and has always been close by and they will be a huge support when he takes over the crown.”

Another royal enthusiast wrote: ‘I have to say, I miss seeing the wider family on the balcony.

At the very least, Charles could have included his cousins and their children, and excluded the wider Kent and Gloucester clans.

“It’s looking a little sparse there, and it’s only getting smaller.”

Someone else replied to the thread, writing, “Yeah. I’d like to see Lady Louise, James, Bea and Edo on the balcony too.’

The Trooping the Color celebration has marked the Sovereign’s official birthday for over 260 years and is celebrated every June.

There was also a big gap yesterday between older members of The Firm – the Duke of Kent, 87, and Duke, 78, and Duchess, 76, of Gloucester – and the new generation of royals on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

It could be that the king and queen are making a clear point with their selections about the future of the royal family and the distance between senior royals and less active members of The Firm.

There were also minor royals who didn’t make it to the balcony and were spotted in a hidden gallery in the depths of Buckingham Palace.

Timothy and Flora Vasterberg, the Earl of St Andrews, Lord Nicholas Windsor, Lady Gabriella and Thomas Kingston were not present on the main balcony with the King and Queen.
