Selena Gomez’s Linda Ronstadt biopic is receiving mixed reactions online

Gomez, 31, will play the legendary singer Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic. The film, currently in pre-production, will be produced by Ronstadt’s manager, Johannes BoylanAnd James Keachwho produced the 2019 documentary Linda Ronstadt: The sound of my voiceas of Wednesday, January 10, report out Variety.

While some Ronstadt fans were surprised by the casting news, Gomez previously opened up about her love for the “You’re No Good” singer. During a Interview September 2015 of Ryan SeacrestGomez pointed to the 77-year-old Ronstadt as the inspiration for her album cover Revival. “It kind of reminds me of Linda Ronstadt, the ’70s vibe,” Gomez said. “I was always told I looked like her and that made me start listening to her music.”

At the time, the Disney Channel alum noted that her favorite Ronstadt song is the 1974 song “When Will I Be Loved.”

Many of Gomez’s fans, also known as Selenators, took to social media to share their excitement following the casting news. “Selena Gomez will play Linda Ronstadt in her upcoming biopic, we are so back,” one fan captioned a video with comparisons of Gomez and Ronstadt’s likeness via X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

I share a photo of a young Ronstadt, another fan wrote“She looked more like Selena Gomez than Selena Gomez looked like Selena Gomez.”

Besides calling Gomez a “fantastic choice” And “perfectBefore the role, many fans shared their hopes that her portrayal of Ronstadt could win her some awards.

“Selena is finally coming for her Oscars,” said one fan tweeted on Wednesday, while another user wrote“Oscar nominee Selena Gomez sounds so good.”

Gomez’s Only murders in the building Co-star Steve Martin also congratulated her on her next big performance via X. “This should be excellent,” Martin, 78, wrote in the caption of an article about the biopic.

While many are excited to see Gomez bring Ronstadt to life on the big screen, others aren’t so happy. “I just listened to the first song on the Linda Ronstadt Essentials playlist… good luck, Selena, this won’t be easy for you!” An X user listed. Another skeptic asked, “Who’s going to sing?”

It is still unknown if Gomez will sing in the film, although some fans are hoping that Ronstadt’s voice will be used instead. “As long as Linda’s actual singing is used,” said one social media user tweeted in response to the casting. “Selena just doesn’t have the quality to match her vocally.”

Another person said that Gomez may look like Ronstadt, but noted“That’s where the comparison ends.”

Ronstadt himself has not commented publicly on the casting, but TMZ reported Wednesday that the 11-time Grammy winner reportedly gave Gomez’s casting her personal stamp of approval. The outlet also claimed that she and the “Rare” singer met at her home a few months ago.

For her part, Gomez hinted at her new role on Tuesday, January 9, by sharing a photo of herself reading Ronstadt’s 2013 book, Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir, via her Instagram story. The next day, Gomez announced that she would be taking a break from social media to focus “on what really matters.” However, hours later she returned to the platform to share a video of herself cooking Gordon Ramsay.
