Cookie lovers across the country are mourning the loss of the sweet chocolate-covered digestive bar.

But it seems all is not lost as Aldi has introduced a brand new cheap alternative just in time for Easter.

The new chocolate treat is called the Belmont Wacko Biscuit Bar and according to Aldi it is similar to the original.

The discount retailer said: “Aldi is ready to save the day with an alternative that not only resembles the great Breakaway flavour, but is cheaper too.”

The crispy cookie bar is covered in a rich outer layer of milk chocolate.

The bars retail for just £1.19 for a pack of nine – that's 13p per biscuit.

Bargain hunters can get it launching Aldi's own brand at 20p cheaper than Nestle's Breakaway – which sells for £1.25.

The Breakaway bar, first introduced in 1970, will no longer be produced from March.

The chocolatier said falling sales had forced him to ax the chocolate treat.

A spokesperson said: “We know fans will be disappointed to see it disappear, but it's time for us to say goodbye to Breakaway.

“We have seen a decline in Breakaway sales in recent years and unfortunately we have had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.

“By saying goodbye to Breakaway, we can focus on our best-performing brands and develop exciting new innovations that will delight consumers' taste buds.”

Nesting said fans can still purchase the bar from retailers in February and March, while supplies last.

But the announcement did not go down well with devastated shoppers who took to social media to express their frustrations.

One said: “First it was the Caramac, now Breakaway bars!

“Nestlé is gradually removing my chocolate childhood from supermarket shelves.”

Another said: “It's the end of the world. What do we do now?”

A third added: “First Caramac and now they're getting rid of Yorkie and Breakaway bars. When will this selection of chocolate bar classics end?”

It comes as chocolate lovers spot Aldi's latest Easter egg and it's a nod to a British classic.

Eagle-eyed shoppers have spotted Aldi's Milk Ripple Egg with honeycomb and pretzel.
