Three ways to celebrate Burns Night affordably with a traditional Scottish spread
DIG out the tartan and raise a toast to Scotland's national poet.
Tonight is Burns Night, a celebration of the life and work of Robert Burns, and a great excuse to get stuck into haggis, tatties and neeps.
Here's how to buy the traditional Scottish spread on a budget. . .
OFFALLEL GOOD: The centerpiece of every Burns supper is haggis, served with a combination of mashed potatoes and swede.
You can get Simon Howie's Original Haggis for £2.25 at Tesco, down from £2.75.
Or Sainsbury's has reduced Macsween haggis, £2.25 with a Nectar card, from £3. Alternatively, you can try Aldi's haggis bons bons – haggis rolled in breadcrumbs – which are also £2.25.
You will then need some spuds. Tesco's all-rounder potatoes cost £1.19 per bag and are ideal for mashing. Then cook and puree the rutabaga to create your needs.
Aldi has prepared packs for £1.19 in Scotland, but you'll save money by buying the veg and making your own. It's 49p at Aldi and 69p at Tesco.
SOFT TOUCH: Cranachan is a fantastic traditional Scottish dessert.
Start by whipping up a pack of whipped cream before mixing in a few tablespoons of honey, whiskey and oats.
Make a raspberry puree by crushing the fruit through a sieve and adding a little sugar. Then alternate the layers of the cream mixture with the puree.
SIP ON SCHOTCH: Wash down your meal with a shot of whiskey. At Tesco you can save a third on selected whisky.
Glen Keith single malt costs £21, down from £31.50, while Famous Grouse costs £15, down from £17.75. Or try Tennent's lager: a ten pack costs £9.20 at Aldi.
If you avoid booze, opt for Scotland's other national drink, Irn-Bru. Two 24-packs cost £17 in Iceland, where a 2-litre bottle costs £1.50.
