BETWEEN trips to the salon and expensive products and gadgets, it's easy to spend a fortune on your hair.

But with a little knowledge you can stay stylish for less. . .

TRAIN YOUR HAIR: Washing your locks every day is a big job, and it also eats up your shampoo and conditioner.

So try to gradually increase the time between hair washes. The theory is that your scalp adapts by producing less oilso your hair doesn't look greasy as quickly.

Start by washing every other day and then build up two or three days between cleanings.

DIY HAIR MASKS: Giving your hair a deep treatment can make it look glossy and lustrous. But instead of buying expensive products in the stores, raid your kitchen cupboards.

An overripe avocado mixed with olives oil works wonders on dry hair. Or try ripe banana mixed with honey and egg yolk, which can help improve volume.

Mix the concoctions in a bowl and let it sit on your hair for about 20 minutes before cleaning it.

TOOL DOWN: Curling irons like the Dyson Airwrap are extremely expensive, but you can turn straight hair into beachy waves without expensive gadgets.

At night, curl wet hair around a fabric curling iron and when you wake up in the morning, it will be dry and perfectly wavy. Argos has a home curling iron on sale for £5, down from £7.50. Or try the TikTok trend of wrapping wet hair around a clean soda can before blow-drying.

Part the hair and hold the tin in place until the hair is dry and you are left with the perfect curl.

MODEL LOOKS: A haircut or color in the salon can be a huge drain on your wallet.

Martin Lewis reveals how families can get Ikea meals every week from just 45p

If you need a haircut or color, have your hair done by an intern to save a lot of money. Simply ask local salons if they need models or search local online message boards.
