Your wallet will win with these budget meals and your rugby fans will think they're scrummy!

BOOST A Roast: A roast dinner should fill a family.

The cheapest roast is usually a whole chicken, starting at around €2.20 per kilo. You can go for cheaper cuts.

A pork shoulder joint, from around £3.70 per kilo, can fetch around half the price of a lean leg.

Make the meal extra filling by stacking vegetables high on the side.

A kilo of wonky carrots costs 50 cents at Morrisons, compared to 65 cents for a standard bag.

Cook your own Yorkshire puddings instead of buying frozen puddings.

All you need is flour, eggs, milk and oil, which will cost you less than $1 for a large batch.

MAKE MESSED MEALS: Ground beef is another key to cheaper meals like bolognese, meatballs and chili.

Reduce costs by choosing a suit with a higher fat content.

In Sainsbury's, minced beef with 20 per cent fat typically costs less than £5 per kilo, while premium mince with five per cent fat can be double that.

Simply skim the oil from the top while cooking.

Larger packages are usually cheaper and bulk with lentils for extra deliciousness.

VEGGIE GOOD DINNERS: Going meat-free occasionally can be good for our health – and our wallets.

Stock up on legumes, potatoes and chunky vegetables like cauliflower and carrots for filling meals.

Rugger lovers will enjoy trying sweet potato and cauliflower curry, vegetable chili stuffed with mixed beans and served with rice and vegetarian lasagna.

You can save costs – and waste – by using frozen vegetables.

You can make a meal for pennies with dried legumes.

If you don't have time to soak them, cook them longer.
