Serving up a dazzling celebration cake doesn’t have to put a dent in your bank balance.
With just £10 you can create ‘fake pastries’ that will really impress guests, says Reshmi Bennett, founder of London bakery Anges de Sucre.
Here Reshmi, who also writes children’s books, gives her tips for fantastic creations on a small budget. . .
BOX SMART: Start with the cheapest boxed cake you can find.
For example, Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference red velvet cake, £2.25, with a nectar card.
If you have more guests to eat, make a two-tier cake by purchasing another one and stacking it on top of each other.
The top cake should be smaller than the bottom one.
If you buy one of the same size, use a large round cookie cutter to cut a smaller circle from the center as your top layer.
A sharp knife also works.
Don’t throw away the leftovers; they can be used as decoration later.
Use a spatula or palette knife to spread both cakes with ready-made icing (Mrs Molly’s costs 97p at Tesco).
DRIP DUPE: Professional cakes are often finished with a ganache drip, but you can easily recreate this look.
Buy a cheap bar of cooking chocolate (Morrisons Savers brand costs 40 cents), melt it and add a little warm water.
Then pour slowly on top so that it drips down the sides.
DO NOT WASTE: Cake scraps can be used to make decorations.
Crumble them with your hands, knead half into small balls and roll in the rest of the crumbs.
Try making sprinkles around the bottom of the cakes from cereal in your cupboard.
Fruit loops or cornflakes both work.
Roughly chop them along with the cheap chocolate if you have any left.
BE CREATIVE: The most important thing is to have fun.
Experiment by adding favorite candies, chocolates or cookies to the top of the cake.
You can even add inexpensive fairy cakes for stunning extra height – and to help feed more guests.
