Four cheap ways to give mom the best breakfast in bed this weekend
SHOW how much you care about Mother’s Day by serving your mother a tasty treat.
But it doesn’t have to cost a bomb to create something special.
Here are a few simple, affordable ideas to try. . .
BASIC INSTINCTS: Prepare some tasty pancakes with the basics from the pantry: eggs, flour and milk.
You can make traditional flat pancakes, served with fresh berries and honey or syrup.
Or take it to the next level by whipping them up with some baking powder to make American-style treats.
Add whipped banana or blueberries to the mixture to make it extra special, or serve with crispy bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup.
PORRIDGE POWER: Oats are cheap and make a bowl of perfect porridge.
Make it even tastier by adding a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter and mashed banana to the pan while the porridge bubbles away.
Serve with warm berries. Frozen blueberries are cheaper than fresh ones.
Or slice the banana on top, sprinkle with raisins and a little nutmeg or cinnamon.
GOOD EGGS: Eggy Bread is a simple, delicious breakfast.
Simply beat two eggs with a dash of milk, dip some bread in it until it is covered with the egg mixture and fry it on both sides in a pan with butter.
Spread with bacon.
You can also make scrambled eggs with smoked salmon.
Scottish smoked salmon trimmings cost £2.25 for 100g at Sainsbury’s, compared to £3.50 for a regular 100g pack.
PERFECT PASTRIES: If mom likes pastries, skip the prepackaged pastries and buy frozen.
They taste better and you can save what you don’t use for later. Also check the packaging price of any pastries.
If you buy them separately you can pay more than €1.
Buy a pack of six frozen ones and they cost less than 50 cents each.
Little hands will love cutting and rolling Jus-Roll Croissants or Cinnamon Swirls from the fridge section – a six-pack has dropped from £2.40 to £1.50 at Morrisons.
