A SUPERMARKET giant with 855 stores will close for a day next month. See if your local branch is affected.
Asda has announced it will be closed for Easter on Sunday, March 31, with only a few selected stores expected to remain open.
Because Good Friday and Easter Monday fall on either side of the bank holiday weekend, opening hours on these two dates may also vary.
But in accordance with Sunday trading laws, which require stores larger than 280 square meters to remain closed on Easter Sunday, Asda will not be open for trading.
The usual opening hours of 7am to 10pm are expected to remain the same for most stores on Friday 29 March, Saturday 30 March and Monday 1 April.
But Asda had advised customers to use their online Store locator to check the opening hours of individual stores.
A spokesperson for the supermarket chain told The Sun that the following opening hours will apply to most Asda stores over Easter.
- Thursday 28 – 7am - 10pm
- Friday 29 – 7am - 10pm
- Saturday 30 – 7am - 10pm
- Sunday 31st – Closed
- Monday April 1 – 7am - 10pm
The same also applies to Asda Express convenience stores, with opening times for most stores listed below.
- Thursday 28 – 7am - 10pm
- Friday 29 – 7am - 10pm
- Saturday 30 – 7am - 10pm
- Sunday 31 – 7am - 10pm
- Monday April 1 – 7am - 10pm
Other major supermarkets are yet to confirm their store opening times over Easter this year, but these are likely to be the same, if not similar, to 2023.
Last year, Lidl closed on Easter Sunday and reopened on Easter Monday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Morrisons shuttered its stores in England and Wales on Easter Sunday, although branches in Scotland remained open as normal.
Aldi branches were also open on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday.
It is normal for supermarkets to close larger stores during the Easter weekend.
Under government rules, all shops in England and Wales larger than 280 square meters must close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
