From Rihanna’s papal-inspired Met Gala look to Kate Moss’ wedding dress, some of the most famous moments of 21st Century fashion have come from the brilliant mind of John Galliano.

Born in Gibraltar to an Italian father and Spanish mother, and raised in south London, his quirky aesthetic has been synonymous with British fashion.

But while he’s lead a very glamorous life, rubbing shoulders with A-listers and supermodels on the red carpet, Galliano has also struggled with addiction, alcoholism and substance abuse.

Now, a new documentary is set to explore the designer’s life, scandals and triumphant return to Paris Couture Fashion Week, after being dropped in 2011 for hurling anti-Semitic insults at a group of Jewish women in a Paris bar.

Directed by Oscar-winning Kevin Macdonald, High & Low: John Galliano, will show the peaks and troughs of the 63-year-old’s high-flying career.

Now 10-years sober, he sat down with Macdonald to discuss his rise, fall and return – from the pits of Paris Fashion Week to one of the most sought-after names in the industry.

Raised the child of a plumber, in south London, Galliano says he was inspired by his Spanish mother, who dressed him and his sisters in immaculately pressed and starched clothes whenever they left the family home.

At the age of 16, he left school to study textile design at East London College, before enrolling at the prestigious St Martin’s School of Art in 1980.

He worked as a dresser at the National Theatre and threw himself into the London club scene – experiences that undoubtedly imprinted his design aesthetic.

After starting an eponymous line in the 1980s, Galliano was appointed as the designer of Givenchy in 1996.

He soon transitioned to Dior, before being spectacularly fired after he was filmed expressing admiration for Hitler and telling a woman, who he thought was Jewish, that her parents should have been gassed.

Heavily intoxicated, he then allegedly ranted to an Asian man sitting with her: ‘****ing Asian b******’.

During his one-day trial in June 2011, Galliano admitted two instances of making anti-Semitic and racist comments and, that September, was given two suspended fines, totalling 6,000 euros.

In honour of Dior’s memory, Galliano designed 47 breathtaking costumes, each evoking the spirit of the couturier’s favourite artists, for the brands  60th anniversary

Galliano’s lawyer cited his struggles with drugs, alcohol and work, noting that he was designing up to 32 collections each year.

Additionally, he was ordered to pay three plaintiffs and five antidiscrimination groups 1 euro each in damages and a combined 16,500 euros in costs.

Face of Dior, Natalie Portman, was among those outraged by his outburst more than two decades ago.

At the time, the Oscar-winning actress said: ‘In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way.

‘I hope at the very least these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.’

Galliano consistently maintained that he is not anti-Semitic or racist but acknowledged struggling with addiction to alcohol, Valium and sleeping tablets, leading him to seek rehabilitation.

It seems that this was the tip of the iceberg for Galliano, who had a string of drunken indiscretions to his name.

Years earlier, coming off the high of another Fashion Week, Galliano stripped naked and spent four hours in a lift at The Ritz, telling guests who tried to enter that he was a lion, while growling at them.

Inside John Galliano’s career

As a student of St Martin’s College of Art (now Central Saint Martins), Galliano garnered attention for his degree collection, heavily influenced by revolutionary France.

His graduate collection, Les Incroyables, was immediately purchased by the fashion boutique Browns and displayed in its South Molton Street windows the following day.

Galliano founded his eponymous label with long-term collaborators Amanda Harlech, then a stylist with Harpers and Queen, and milliner Stephen Jones.

The St Martin’s School of Art graduate won four British Fashion Designer of the Year awards and was celebrated for his unconventional work, which frequently challenged the industry.

Initially, financial support was provided by Johan Brun. When this arrangement concluded, Danish entrepreneur Ole Peder Bertelsen, owner of the company Aguecheek, which was also supporting Katharine Hamnett, took over control.

However, this agreement ended in 1988, influencing Galliano’s decision to relocate to Paris the following year in search of financial backing.

The designer secured the backing of Faycal Amor, owner of fashion brand Plein Sud, who invited him to set up his base in Paris.

Galliano’s first show was presented in 1989 as part of Paris Fashion Week. But the financial agreement with Amor was short-lived and ended in 1993, resulting in the designer’s absence from that season.

With the help of American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley, then European correspondent at Vanity Fair, Galliano was introduced to Portuguese socialite and fashion patron São Schlumberger, as well as financial backers of venture firm Arbela Inc, John Bult and Mark Rice.

‘Of course, I’d heard of him. But it really wasn’t until Andre and I started to help him with his shows in Paris that he and I became… friends,’ Wintour explains in High & Low.

‘It isn’t often you meet a great designer. If you think of the Brit designers that have really changed the way women dress, or look, or how we think about fashion… but immediately when you saw what John was doing, you realised that he was one of them, so we had to help him.’

This partnership provided Galliano with the financial backing and social endorsement necessary for establishing credibility in Paris.

His next collection – in which Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss modelled for free – played a pivotal role in the development of Galliano as a fashion house, and is regarded as a ‘fashion moment’ in high fashion circles.

In 1995, Galliano was named the designer of Givenchy by Bernard Arnault, owner of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, marking the first time an Englishman took the helm of one of France’s luxury houses.

While the news sent shockwaves through the fashion world, it did not seem to affect the supremely confident designer.

His long-time collaborator, Amanda Harlech, once described him by saying: ‘I did only once and I can only compare it to being hit by a massive surfing wave. His indifference was absolute.’

Galliano showcased his first couture show for Givenchy at the Stade de France, receiving widespread acclaim from the media. Additionally, a number of designs were licenced to Vogue Patterns.

In 1996, he made the transition to Dior under LVMH, with Alexander McQueen stepping into the role at Givenchy.

‘Something evoked in me, I felt like Rocky,’ Galliano enthuses in the documentary. ‘I thought I’m really going to go for this.’

Galliano’s assurance won him a roster of celebrity supporters, including actresses Charlize Theron and Marion Cotillard, who frequently donned his designs.

One of his first dresses for Dior was worn by Diana, Princess of Wales at the fashion house’s 50th anniversary party in New York.

The dress, described by critics as an ‘unsupported petticoat’, caused a stir and made the front pages of several newspapers.

In 2001, Galliano was made a Commander of the British Empire for his services to the fashion industry, and received his award from the Queen at Buckingham Palace that November.

For the investiture, Galliano – with long blond hair and pencil-thin moustache – wore a traditional morning suit, eschewing a shirt.

‘I was surprised when I was awarded a CBE,’ he said. ‘It’s one of the greatest honours I’ve ever had – I’m very proud.’

Another notable career moment was creating a showgirl costume for Kylie Minogue to don during the Showgirl, The Greatest Hits Tour in Europe, 2005.

Additionally, Galliano designed Kate Moss’ dress for her wedding to Jamie Hince in 2011, as per the mode’s request during his tenure at Dior.

Recalling the big day, the designer says: ‘Before she came out, she held my hand, she was shaking and said, “Who am I?” I said, “You’re fabulous and he’s about to discover your want past”. And the rest was just Kate.’

The dress featured an understated silhouette with a figure-hugging fit and intricate golden paillette embroidery, reflecting the delicate couture touch synonymous with the designer’s work at Dior.

The hotel called his office in Paris, who offered to cover the bills of any guests who had become inconvenienced.

Now admitting his demons, Galliano begins the documentary by saying: ‘I’m going to tell you everything’ – from dealing with his devout Catholic parents’ horrified reaction to his homosexuality to his abuse of Valium, bromides, amphetamines and sleeping pills.

‘I was committing suicide, slowly,’ he says.

He also revealed struggles with his workload and depression following the deaths of his father and close friends Steven Robinson and Alexander McQueen.

Despite his explanations, the fallout from Galliano’s rant resulted in the termination of his 15-year tenure as creative director at Dior – where he was earning £4 million-a-year.

The designer was exiled from fashion – yet only temporarily – and he designed Kate Moss’ wedding dress the same year, calling the project his ‘creative rehab’.

In an interview with WWD, Kevin Macdonald recalled being in New York when videos of Galliano’s anti-Semantic outburst emerged online.

‘I was kind of repulsed by him and the way he looked,’ the film director said.

‘I have lost family in the Holocaust and my grandfather’s family all died.

‘That’s a part of why I felt a personal repulsion, but at the same time, I’m always interested in films about ambiguous characters who you’re not quite sure what to think of them.’

A number of John Galliano’s friends and former employees share their thoughts on-screen, including Anna Wintour, Naomi Campbell, Charlize Theron, Amanda Harlech and Kate Moss.

‘We’re both shy and a bit awkward, ’til we’ve had a drink,’ Moss says, chuckling.

The supermodel starred in Galliano’s first show in Paris, admitting ‘I was so nervous’.

She goes on to explain that Galliano, now a good friend, taught her how to walk down the catwalk: ‘He said put your hips and your pelvis forwards… and lean back.

‘No one gives you direction like John, there was always a story in every show. It’s fantasy, and that’s what fashion should be.’

‘He’d say, “You’re a princess and you’ve just escaped the castle… and the walls are after you. You’ve got to run Kate, run!”‘

Edward Enninful, former editor-in-chief of British Vogue, adds: ‘For other designers, they were just models. But with John, they became actresses.

‘He would take them on a journey, through countries, through time. And they would come up feeling so enthused, so excited.’

There is also an appearance from Philippe Virgitti, the target of the designer’s anti-Semitic comments.

During the 2011 court hearing in Paris, Virgitti stated: ‘I don’t think he’s racist or anti-Semitic. I just think he’s very ill.’

However, in the documentary, he explains how Galliano’s verbal attack has negatively impacted his life – and does not forgive him.

Galliano insists that he apologised to Virgitti, but Virgitti denies this.

‘There is no real explanation for the designer’s behaviour. His psychiatrist believes he looked, at random, for a hateful stereotype in our culture,’ he says.

Meanwhile, Sidney Toledano, the Jewish boss of Dior, suggests that anti-Semitism could have been weaved into his Catholic upbringing.

The film also shows a clip of the designer the day after his father’s funeral in 2003, where Galliano’s voice appears slurred, and his pupils gigantic, as he prepares for his next fashion show.

Following a two-month stay at Cottonwood Rehab Clinic in Arizona, Galliano briefly joined Oscar de la Renta in New York.

The move was reportedly arranged by Anna Wintour, American Vogue editor-in-chief, and Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Conde Nast International.

Mr Newhouse is also said to have put Galliano in contact with Rabbi Barry Marcus, who, at the time, was the senior minister of Central Synagogue in London.

Rabbi Marcus educated the designer in antisemitism, introduced him to a Holocaust survivor and invited him to services at his synagogue.

‘Over time, we built up a relationship and I’m absolutely satisfied that to brand him as an antisemite would be an injustice,’ the rabbi explained.

‘His knowledge of Jews and Judaism was actually very limited.’

In 2014, John Galliano was appointed creative director of Belgian brand Maison Margiela, which described him as one of the ‘greatest undisputed talents of all time’.

‘Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul,’ said Renzo Rosso, president of the label’s parent company OTB, in a statement.

‘John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time. A unique, exceptional couturier for a Maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion.

‘I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home.’

Galliano, who oversees the design of all Margiela lines, including couture and women’s ready-to-wear, presented his first collection for the house during Paris Couture Week in January 2015.

Marking the first time Rihanna wore Margiela to the Met Gala, Galliano created the singer’s iconic Pope-inspired ensemble for the 2018 event, following the theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

The extraordinary look, featuring a heavily beaded robe, matching mitre and mini dress, referenced Galliano’s Dior Couture 2001 collection, which was inspired by papal regalia.

The release of High & Low coincides with a catwalk comeback as Galliano made a triumphant return to Paris Couture Fashion Week with Maison Margiela’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection.

In January, Galliano transformed the left bank underbelly of Paris’ Pont Alexandre III bridge into a 1920s dive bar, illuminated by a subdued glow from spotlights.

The Artisan collection, which showcased unique fabric techniques and porcelain-effect make-up, earned the designer a thunderous, five-minute standing ovation.

Now a decade sober, Galliano, who was once recognised for strutting down the catwalk at the end of a show, has adopted a low-profile approach and no longer makes an appearance.

Galliano told Macdonald that he wasn’t expecting to be forgiven following the documentary, but instead to be ‘a little more understood’.

The collection received worldwide critical acclaim, with Anna Wintour telling The Times ‘the Maison Margiela couture show captured so many people’s imaginations’ and ‘it was a reminder that when John’s work soars, it lifts fashion higher.’

Prince Andrew's fall from grace will be turned into a major documentary by a film company that works closely with Netflix.

The Mail on Sunday understands the film will explore the Duke of York's “character arc”, from a “war hero” and the “Queen's favourite” to the scandal over his close friendship with pedophile sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, which led to his departure from royal duties in 2019.

The program is made by award-winning production company Sandpaper Films, known for working with top streaming services Netflix, Apple and Amazon.

Sandpaper has made several films about the royal family, including the 2017 film 'Diana, 7 days', which analyzed her final days and featured interviews with Prince William and Prince Harry.

Other productions focused on the war crimes trial of genocidal Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic and the 2012 Rochdale sex trafficking case.

Producers are keen to approach Andrew's former private secretary, Alistair Watson, who worked for the duke between 2003 and 2012. If he cooperated, insiders say it could be “bad news” for the Duke as Mr Watson “knows where the bodies are.” to bury'.

Mr Watson was hired to support the duke in his role as Britain's trade envoy, where he represented the government around the world after leaving the Royal Navy in 2001.

The duke has faced a series of controversies in his role, including claims he went on holiday with a Libyan arms smuggler. Andrew quit the role in 2011 after stories circulated about him visiting convicted pedophile Epstein at his New York home after being released from prison.

Last night Mr Lownie told the MoS he believes this period is still 'murky' because government documents are kept secret until 2065.

“I think there are a lot of unanswered questions,” he said.

It is understood the new documentary will not be 'sensational' and will not focus exclusively on the duke's disastrous Newsnight interview in 2019.

Nevertheless, news of the film will further dampen hopes within the palace that the furore surrounding Prince Andrew, who has always denied any wrongdoing, would fade from the public imagination.

It follows a rocky start to the year for the Duke after recently released court documents released in the US alleged Andrew had an orgy with underage girls and touched a woman's breast while posing with a doll of himself .

The controversy increased pressure on King Charles to evict his brother from the Royal Lodge in Windsor, the 30-room property where he lives with his ex-wife Sarah, who last week revealed she has skin cancer.

Scott M. Stringer, the former New York City comptroller and 2021 mayoral candidate, said Thursday he would form an exploratory committee and raise money for a possible primary challenge against Mayor Eric Adams next year.

The move surprised much of the city's Democratic establishment and heralded the start of a combative new phase of Mr. Adams' mayoralty, as Mr. Stringer became the first Democrat to directly challenge the mayor's reelection.

Each primary challenge promises to be extremely difficult. No challenger has defeated an incumbent New York City mayor in a primary since David Dinkins defeated Edward I. Koch in 1989.

But few of his predecessors are as lowly regarded in the polls as Mr. Adams, who faces the city's budget woes, an escalating migrant crisis and an FBI investigation into his campaign. Other challengers may soon follow.

In an interview, Mr. Stringer gave a bleak assessment of the nation's largest city, saying New Yorkers were facing a “crisis of confidence” in City Hall's ability to manage the budget and the migrant crisis.

He cast himself as a veteran alternative, ready to replace what he derided as the mayor's “minimalist agenda” with his own policies to increase affordable housing and soften the impact of declining revenues on city coffers.

“Let's face it: Things aren't getting done,” Mr. Stringer said, referring to the mayor's “get things done” mantra. “I know how to lead. I know how to manage. And I know the city's finances like the back of my hand.”

Mr. Stringer will have to deal with his own baggage. His 2021 bid for mayor all but collapsed after an old colleague came forward and accused him of groping her and pressuring her to have sex when he ran for public advocacy 20 years earlier.

He strongly denied wrongdoing and has since sued the woman, Jean Kim, for defamation. But he finished that mayoral race with just 5 percent of the vote and has not held office since.

And Mr. Adams, despite his woes, enters the reelection fight with an overflowing campaign war chest, the backing of powerful labor unions and strong backing from African Americans determined to deliver a second term to the city's second black mayor.

Yet Mr. Stringer and other Democrats who see a political opening appear increasingly convinced that Mr. Adams could be deeply vulnerable. Public polls show his approval rating at just 28 percent.

Other potential challengers include State Senator Jessica Ramos of Queens; former Governor Andrew M. Cuomo; Jumaane Williams, city public advocate; and Kathryn Garcia, the New York state operations director who finished second in the 2021 Democratic primary. All have discussed possible campaigns with allies in recent weeks and may now face pressure to accelerate their plans.

Mr Stringer, 63, said he would begin a listening and fundraising tour of the city in the coming days. He plans to make a final decision on his candidacy in the second half of the year.

A former state assemblyman, president and comptroller of the Manhattan borough, Mr. Stringer made a promising entry into the 2021 race for mayor, drawing the support of key labor unions and the left-wing Working Families Party and drawing on three decades of experience in public offices to produce extensive policy books.

But he struggled to gain traction in a crowded race at the height of the pandemic — even before sexual misconduct allegations derailed his campaign and prompted most of his prominent supporters to abandon him. (The American Federation of Teachers, the nation's second-largest teachers union, and the United Federation of Teachers trail Mr. Stringer.)

Mr. Stringer's allies believe his experience and profile could make him a more powerful opponent for Mr. Adams this time around. He has more name recognition than some other potential challengers, can claim fiscal expertise after two terms as comptroller and has positioned himself politically to appeal to both progressives who loathe Mr. Adams and more moderate New Yorkers who may worry about the direction of the city. .

The mayor's ability to easily correct course may be limited before the June 2025 primaries. He has limited control over the influx of more than 150,000 migrants from the southwest border, which has tested the city's safety net and strained its budget. Mr. Adams reversed some of the most unpopular cuts to the city budget, but the updated spending plan he released Tuesday still promised a year of tough budget choices. Libraries remain closed on Sundays and schools face significant budget cuts.

Then there is the matter of the FBI investigation into his campaign and Turkey. Mr. Adams has not been accused of wrongdoing, but the seizure of his electronic devices last year signals a serious investigation that could lead to charges against close allies, or even the mayor himself.

In the interview, Mr. Stringer said Mr. Adams deserved the benefit of the doubt surrounding the federal investigation. But he argued that the government was losing ground on several fronts.

“It has become clear to me over the past two years that New York City needs a new direction,” Mr. Stringer said. “We cannot move the city forward with a minimalist agenda.”

He admitted that the flow of migrants had placed a significant financial burden on the city. But he said he worried that Adams' tough approach to convincing the federal and state governments to take more responsibility had backfired and antagonized the White House.

“This is not a me-me-me situation,” he said. “This is about how you forge alliances.”

He called the mayor's budget approach confusing, arguing that Mr. Adams had spent weeks “doing a budget dance with himself,” threatening deep cuts that he later reversed, rather than working with the City Council to find a solution. find a sustainable path forward.

Mr Stringer lamented the sharp decline in new home construction. He said he would prioritize creating affordable housing, suggesting he is a Housing plan of 47 pages ready for his 2021 campaign. Mr. Adams' ambitious housing plans are being hampered by gridlock in Albany.

Mr. Stringer, whose 2021 campaign called for repurposing $1 billion in police funding, even found space to criticize Mr. Adams' signature priority: public safety. He attributed the decline in major crimes such as shootings and murders to national trends, arguing that the city was spending a fortune on officer overtime in exchange for merely “flatlining” key crime statistics.

In recent weeks, Mr Stringer has hinted at his interest in a possible run. It is striking that he was a host a reunion from former aides earlier this month; several left with the distinct impression that he was running. He has already planned several fundraisers.

His early action appears to position him as a contender in a special election if Mr. Adams were indicted and resigned.

“This is no longer a time to play checkers, this is a time to play strategic chess,” Mr. Stringer said. “We need a mayor who knows how to govern and lead, but who also really understands how government works.”

Shakespeare’s most extraordinary psychological drama is an enchanting story about love and murder, the renewing power of nature and the internal struggle of a damaged man trying to control his destiny.

The tragedy tells the story of soldier Macbeth who gruesomely becomes king of Scotland thanks to the promises of witches and the insistence of his wife.

Donmar’s version of the famous play uses binaural sound technology to put the audience inside the heads of the Macbeths and encourage them to wonder, are humans ever really responsible for our actions?

Although David has a healthy stage career, he is playing Hamlet for the first time. However, he did play the character in a two-part BBC Radio 4 broadcast in 2022.

It will be his first Shakespearean role on stage since the Scot played Richard II in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production between 2013 and 2016.

He and Cush are directed by Donmar Associate Director Max Webster, who also directed Henry V.

Hamlet will be the final production of the 30th anniversary season for Donmar, which started life as a banana ripening warehouse.

Tickets for David Tennant and Cush Jumbo’s Macbeth, which opens on December 8 and closes on February 10, are sold out.

In November, David thrilled fans when he appeared in Doctor Who’s highly anticipated 60th anniversary celebration, reprising his role as Time Lord alongside Catherine Tate, who played his companion Donna Noble.

The pair’s return to the BBC show, in the first of three specials, 15 years after they last traveled together in the TARDIS, has been praised by fans.

It was a reunion that had raised questions, as Donna’s memory of The Doctor was wiped away in an attempt to save her life during their final adventure in 2008.

However, showrunner Russell T Davies created an unlikely loophole that restored Donna’s memories, allowing her to see The Doctor again after they dealt with a new alien threat.

Ever heard of Wasta, South Dakota?

Well, neither did 32-year-old globetrotter Eva zu Beck before she set out on an epic road trip to explore some of the least visited states in America.

In a new YouTube video, Eva begins her journey with a tour of Wasta, explaining that the small town has only 65 full-time residents and the limited spread of facilities, including a gas station, motel and characterful bar.

A resident she meets at the bar named Jerry, who owns a farm and a barn, reveals that crime is not a problem in the north central state as a whole and that the most important values are: ‘family, religion and freedom.’

When asked if people should come see South Dakota and some of the smaller communities, Jerry says, “I would encourage them to explore South Dakota, but I hope they leave their values behind and don’t move to South Dakota with the wrong implications. values here.

‘Respect the environment and you will have a good time in South Dakota.

‘We have ‘The land of infinite diversity’, is the state motto. It is beautiful here and we enjoy every day.’

Another local Eva who speaks to Crystal describes South Dakota the same way as Jerry. She muses: ‘[It’s] peaceful, serene and the wide open spaces are priceless. It’s also a very diverse state.”

After checking out of Wasta, Eva is seen visiting one of South Dakota’s biggest attractions; the Wall drugstore.

According to the store websiteit started as a place that sold free ice water and today, more than “two million visitors a year stop at the popular roadside attraction for a meal or activity, 5-cent coffee and ice water – which is still free.”

Filming herself walking through the cavernous drugstore, Eva is clearly bewildered by the place.

She tells viewers, “So what exactly is Wall Drug? I’m still trying to wrap my head around it, but it’s basically kind of a truck stop, but more of a theme park, slash souvenir shop, slash novelty shop, slash restaurant [stop]’

The other offerings include “art galleries and all kinds of crazy Americana vibes.”

In one clip, a wall of stuffed animals can be seen, while in another, an animatronic dinosaur installed in the store roars at Eva.

Despite the randomness, Eva describes Wall Drug as “amazing” and seems to enjoy her visit to “the most famous store in the middle of nowhere in all of America.”

The next state Eva visits on her video tour is Iowa.

She says this is a state she’s only heard about because of its corn and agriculture, “but that doesn’t necessarily mean [for its] natural beauty.’

The avid traveler decides to visit one of the state’s biggest attractions, the largest truck stop in the world.

Iowa 80 in Walcott sits on a 225-acre parcel with 100,000 square feet of retail space, 900 parking spaces and serves approximately 5,000 customers per day.

As Eva enters the building, she says, “So this truck stop, as soon as you walk in, it’s just huge. It’s absolutely huge.

‘And at first glance it feels a bit like a souvenir shop. But if you look a little deeper, it has a lot of infrastructure and a lot of other things that you could probably do, I think you could enjoy yourself here for at least 24 hours.”

Walking around the truck stop, Eva discovers an impressive mix of services, including a dentist, a driver’s lounge, a movie theater, a chiropractor, a “quite large” laundromat, an arcade, and a hairdresser.

After giving the visitor attraction a try, the travel professional, who has more than 843,000 followers on Instagram, says: “So for me, as a European, there are a lot of things about this truck stop that are just… astonishing.

As she continues her road trip east, Eva tells viewers that her visits to lesser-known states like South Dakota and Iowa were “pretty eye-opening.”

She concludes, “After all, this is the heart of the US, the areas that produce the most crops, the lands that feed the nation, the highways that connect two sides of a vast and diverse continent.

‘You can not ignore it. It’s better to embrace it. As far as traveling here goes, I think as long as you have people to talk to and learn from, any place can become a pretty fascinating travel destination.

Fashion houses are no strangers to the timeless elegance of country style.

Ganni, the Danish brand synonymous with Scandi cool, recently collaborated with Barbour and earlier this month the Princess of Wales stepped out in a jacket from stalwart British outerwear, Burberry.

The jacket, which cost £900, was a redesigned version of the padded jacket worn by the late Queen at Balmoral.

Black kick-flare jeans and chunky ankle boots completed Kate’s country, modern look.

Here’s how you can add just the right amount of country flair to your wardrobe…

BOOT CAMP

Tassel, £359, penelopechilvers.com

Two equally attractive, but very different, boot options are available here (left: Contrast Tab, £170, blundstone.co.uk, right: Tassle, £359, penelopechilvers.com)

Leather knee-high socks, £159.99, mango.com

Leather knee-high socks, £159.99, mango.com

There are two equally attractive, but very different boot options available here.

The first? The knee-high, flat equestrian boot that wouldn’t look out of place from point to point, or on a cavalry officer at Hyde Park Barracks.

Mango has a pair in the perfect shade of brown for £159.99, which could be Hermes. Tuck in some loose jeans for a prim-meets-cool fusion.

The other option? The sturdy, ankle-length type of boot with a track sole favored by the Princess of Wales. Practical enough for the forest, but stylish enough for sidewalks: Princess favorites are from the Australian cult brand Blundstone, or the fashion crowd’s favorite, Penelope Chilvers.

TENS A TENS

Inspired by the elegance of the racing set he encountered during his time as a bellhop at the Savoy hotel, Guccio Gucci added horse bit hardware to many of his leather goods in the 1930s.

And his son Aldo then added it to the brand’s loafers in the 1950s, creating a huge and varied fan base: not many shoes have been worn by either US President George Bush or Madonna.

Snaffle headband, £27, and wrist warmers, £35, waringbrooke.com

The flair of equestrian sports has an enduring appeal, it seems. Diehard city dwellers consider the snaffle as the least scary way to inject just a small dose of country polish into your wardrobe.

Arket has a suede snaffle belt (£67, arket.com) that would be chic over a super-sized blazer, while Fairfax & Favor’s loafers (£185, fairfaxandfavor.com) feature gold hardware that resembles a snaffle.

It’s no coincidence that country clothing has a lot of structure: tweed, corduroy and quilted fabrics are a necessary antidote to the biting cold of the grouse moor and the drafty corridors of country houses.

Texture is another way to incorporate a sense of heritage into an urban wardrobe.

Beaufort & Blake, co-founded by agriculture student Sam Pullin and Jermyn Street apprentice Edward Bonnar, makes culotte-style corduroy trousers (£71.20, beaufort andblake.com) that bring country decor into the city.

Even they know there is a time and a place for plus-fours. And Oxford Street probably isn’t. Velvet offers a lush take on warmth in the evening.

JUMP IN JODHPURS

Earlier this month, Ascot released its first-ever lookbook for the winter racing season, and it offers a modern, accessible take on traditional equestrian style.

The city lover’s shortcut to the country look? Jodhpur-style pants that are less Pony Club and more Jilly Cooper.

Head to Mango and Reserved for stirrup leggings for under £25, which give a subtle nod to traditional jodhpur, or to Ralph Lauren for a luxurious black velvet pair (£279) that will be perfect with a statement shirt and heels for the party season .

Just don’t forget the golden rule for laundry beyond the M25: don’t over-dry anything on the Aga. Or maybe you do, if you want the authentic orange Aga burn marks that adorn the clothes of every toff (and underpants, I might add).

GOOD GIRLS LOVE A WAISTCOAT

Tweed Houndstooth Waistcoat, £99.95, Joule. com (available from mid-December)

Tweed Houndstooth Waistcoat, £99.95, Joule. com (available from mid-December)

Forget the padded kind of waistcoat that has lately become the standard for any self-respecting banker. This is a custom-made waistcoat, probably made of tweed. The kind of thing Katharine Hepburn would have worn tucked into high-waisted pants.

This season, heritage brand Schoffel is expanding its operations and has created a women’s waistcoat made from British milled Lovat tweed (£269.95, hoeffelcountry.com).

Combined with jeans at the weekend or black trousers during the week, the pleasure of a warm body and unconstricted arms cannot be underestimated.

CHECKMATE

The easiest way to spot a country bumpkin in the wild? A check, of course.

Cardigan, £71.20, and shirt, £63.20, beaufortandblake.com

Cardigan, £71.20, and shirt, £63.20, beaufortandblake.com

Control in the countryside is what camouflage is to the army: a uniform. And the check is steeped in history.

The Tattersall version is named after the Tattersall Horse Fair, which opened in 1776 and featured horses draped in checked blankets.

Head to Troy London – founded by sisters Rosie van Cutsem and Lucia Ruck Keene and located down the road from the Waleses’ Norfolk home in Anmer – for a Tattersall shirt that combines the androgyny of the check with the femininity of a bow in a modern guise. redesigned standard shirt (£135, troylondon.com).

Combined with jeans and ballerinas, it also creates a perfect country flair in the city.

We do love to be beside the seaside – and part of the charm of Britain’s coastlines are the colourful and eye-catching beach huts that line the shores.

There is more than 200,000 of them across the nation and their variety is as staggering as their number.

When they emerged in the mid 18th century they were originally used to store clothes as well as other beachside equipment and were not designed to be lived in.

However a new wave of luxury beach huts has sought to redefine the small vibrant shed-like structures into something more high-end that offers people a place to stay overnight.

In last night’s Britain’s Best Beach Huts, which aired on Channel 4 at 8pm, TV presenter Laura Jackson and The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades battled it out to find the most luxurious examples.

Their search included a £510,000 seaside home where private vehicles are banned from driving to it, as well as a sauna beach hut in Margate that’s free to use.

Elsewhere, a ‘double decker’ beach hut was explored in Scarborough. It comes complete with a balcony, kitchen and living area for just £350-a-week.

Here, FEMAIL takes a look at the luxurious beach huts that featured on the programme…

Entering one of the huts, the co-host is presented with a ‘lovely seating area, storage, full kitchen, working electrics and an entertainment system.’

‘Just about everything you could possibly want,’ concludes Jay, before also discovering a sleeping area on a second floor of the beach hut.

‘All the everyday luxuries you could want… a ladder leads to a cosy sleeping area,’ revealed the presenter.

He then met with the owner Tony Webb, who explained how his mother bought the property a few days or weeks before he was born and this season will be his 64th summer on the beach.

‘Absolutely adore it down here. It’s very special,’ Tony said, before explaining that the power for the hut comes from solar panels on the roof. He also added that most the huts are handed down from ‘generation to generation’.

It took four and a half years to complete the build, with pine being used outside to be weather resistant and timber placed inside to withstand all the moisture.

One of the builders discussed with Laura how there also couldn’t be any exposed fixings because if someone sat down on one they’d burn themselves from the heat of the screws.

‘This is what I call romantic, imagine a weekend away in somewhere like that,’ said Jay upon seeing the hut.

He continued: ‘You might argue this is more than a humble hut, but on a hunt all about luxury, this is a must see.

‘This has everything, it’s beautiful, it’s like a little home, it’s everything you need but in quite a small space… it seems the person that created this, their attention to detail is second to none.’

Guests pay £1,000 a week to stay in the hut, owned by Ben, who bought the whole bay.

He explained: ‘Funds from the cabin help conserve this incredibly special place. we plant trees where we can, which are much appreciated by the wildlife. There’s always work to do here and that’s part of the pleasure of the whole place.’

Jay added: ‘This might not be a typical beach hut, but that’s the point. It’s larger and more luxurious than the average, which is exactly what I’m looking for… That hut is so special, it made me feel like home as soon as I entered it.’

The two-storey beach huts are found between more traditional beach huts, that still offer that sense of community that is often found among the users of the seaside homes.

Steve Garvey, a perennial baseball All-Star in the 1970s and 1980s for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, said Friday that as a Republican he was considering a candidate for the United States Senate in California.

He would give the GOP a celebrity in the high-profile race to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 89, a Democrat, the senior member of the chamber and due to retire at the end of her term. She has recently struggled with health issues that have led some fellow Democrats to ask her to retire early.

In heavily Democratic California, the race has attracted lukewarm interest from Republicans. Only lesser-known candidates applied.

California hasn’t elected a Republican to the Senate since 1988, and a host of prominent Democrats are waiting in the wings, including Representatives Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee.

Mr Garvey, 74, one of baseball’s most prolific players before steroids tainted the sport’s record books, said in an interview he expected to make a decision in the coming weeks. He noted how difficult it is to set up a campaign.

“You can imagine it’s like getting an expansion franchise,” he said, using a sports analogy. “It’s a daunting task in California.”

Mr. Garvey would be a gamble, but his participation in the race could disrupt the primaries. Under the state system, the first and second place winners advance to the general election regardless of party membership.

Democrats are so dominant in the state that they are widely expected to win both slots and generally compete against each other. Having a Republican candidate with some name recognition can make that more difficult.

By being in the public eye, Mr. Garvey has sometimes attracted unwanted attention. Although he developed a reputation for avoiding vices and flirting as a player, he admitted shortly after leaving the game that he had fathered children with two different women shortly before marrying a third.

When asked on Friday how he felt about the brilliance of his candidacy, Mr. Garvey that it wouldn’t discourage him.

“I’ve probably had pretty good spring training for the last 50 years,” he said.

A man who has a fear of confined spaces decided to face his fear head-on by spending five hours fighting his way through a cave system that was a foot wide at points.

Ally Law, 26, from Southampton, was exploring a hilly area in Bangor, North Wales with his friend Jack Jerrard, 30, when the pair discovered a hole in the side of a hill.

After seeing the small opening, the content creators imagined themselves a “claustrophobia challenge” in which they explored the cave after squeezing their way inside.

When they embarked on their challenge, which Ally says was about “overcoming a fear,” they admit they “freaked out” as they squeezed their bodies through spaces as small as a foot.

The friends, who filmed their challenge during the five-hour exploration of the cave, have now been viewed more than 100,000 times on YouTube.

The creator of the content, Ally, recalled being frightened at points where he was trapped in narrow parts of the cave with barely any visibility.

He said, “At one point I was wedged in pretty hard and it hit my back and stomach. My neck also hurt because I had to tilt my head to the side because it didn’t fit.

“We were starting to think we might have to go back, but it’s a good thing we didn’t, because we’d been there for five hours anyway.

“You can’t see anything down there without a flashlight. It’s another level of darkness. Even with light you lose all sense of whether you are going down or up. It throws out all your perception.

“We didn’t know it was going to come out the other side. We thought that if we dived deep into it, we could come out the same way in the worst case scenario.

“I know it’s probably not the best motto to have, but if you can get in, you can probably get out.”

In the video, the pair can be seen declaring themselves ‘stupid’ as they become trapped in a confined space, before managing to claw themselves back to freedom and find another route.

A clip shows Ally realizing the danger he’s put himself in as he says, “I’m sorry I did this, this is terrible.”

After completing his challenge, Ally said, “It felt great when we got out. You would never think you taste fresh air, but you taste it and you feel it. It was great to breathe fresh air.

“I know it’s not safe and there are dangers involved, but we wouldn’t do anything that we think would kill us or get stuck.”

His “cheap” flashlight batteries even failed in the pitch-black shaft, leaving them with only one headlamp between the pair until they thankfully started working again.

Ally says he didn’t realize how many people were freaked out by tight spaces until he saw the reaction to his video.

One said, “I couldn’t think of anything worse.”

A second said, “You could never give me anything to do this.” I choose life.’

A third joked: ‘Respect to you, you really have balls of steel. I thought I’d get in the mood and crawl under my bed to look at it. That was enough for me.’

A fourth said, ‘I feel claustrophobic watching this! fair game dude.’
