While Barbour collaborates with the hip Danish label Ganni, ALICE HARE explores how you can go about it… Country style if you don’t have bangs

Fashion houses are no strangers to the timeless elegance of country style.

Ganni, the Danish brand synonymous with Scandi cool, recently collaborated with Barbour and earlier this month the Princess of Wales stepped out in a jacket from stalwart British outerwear, Burberry.

The jacket, which cost £900, was a redesigned version of the padded jacket worn by the late Queen at Balmoral.

Black kick-flare jeans and chunky ankle boots completed Kate’s country, modern look.

Here’s how you can add just the right amount of country flair to your wardrobe…

BOOT CAMP

There are two equally attractive, but very different boot options available here.

The first? The knee-high, flat equestrian boot that wouldn’t look out of place from point to point, or on a cavalry officer at Hyde Park Barracks.

Mango has a pair in the perfect shade of brown for £159.99, which could be Hermes. Tuck in some loose jeans for a prim-meets-cool fusion.

The other option? The sturdy, ankle-length type of boot with a track sole favored by the Princess of Wales. Practical enough for the forest, but stylish enough for sidewalks: Princess favorites are from the Australian cult brand Blundstone, or the fashion crowd’s favorite, Penelope Chilvers.

TENS A TENS

Inspired by the elegance of the racing set he encountered during his time as a bellhop at the Savoy hotel, Guccio Gucci added horse bit hardware to many of his leather goods in the 1930s.

And his son Aldo then added it to the brand’s loafers in the 1950s, creating a huge and varied fan base: not many shoes have been worn by either US President George Bush or Madonna.

The flair of equestrian sports has an enduring appeal, it seems. Diehard city dwellers consider the snaffle as the least scary way to inject just a small dose of country polish into your wardrobe.

Arket has a suede snaffle belt (£67, arket.com) that would be chic over a super-sized blazer, while Fairfax & Favor’s loafers (£185, fairfaxandfavor.com) feature gold hardware that resembles a snaffle.

Or try Waring Brooke for bartack accessories made on a traditional knitting machine in rural Nottinghamshire.

EMBRACE TEXTURES

It’s no coincidence that country clothing has a lot of structure: tweed, corduroy and quilted fabrics are a necessary antidote to the biting cold of the grouse moor and the drafty corridors of country houses.

Texture is another way to incorporate a sense of heritage into an urban wardrobe.

Beaufort & Blake, co-founded by agriculture student Sam Pullin and Jermyn Street apprentice Edward Bonnar, makes culotte-style corduroy trousers (£71.20, beaufort andblake.com) that bring country decor into the city.

Even they know there is a time and a place for plus-fours. And Oxford Street probably isn’t. Velvet offers a lush take on warmth in the evening.

JUMP IN JODHPURS

Earlier this month, Ascot released its first-ever lookbook for the winter racing season, and it offers a modern, accessible take on traditional equestrian style.

The city lover’s shortcut to the country look? Jodhpur-style pants that are less Pony Club and more Jilly Cooper.

Head to Mango and Reserved for stirrup leggings for under £25, which give a subtle nod to traditional jodhpur, or to Ralph Lauren for a luxurious black velvet pair (£279) that will be perfect with a statement shirt and heels for the party season .

Just don’t forget the golden rule for laundry beyond the M25: don’t over-dry anything on the Aga. Or maybe you do, if you want the authentic orange Aga burn marks that adorn the clothes of every toff (and underpants, I might add).

GOOD GIRLS LOVE A WAISTCOAT

Forget the padded kind of waistcoat that has lately become the standard for any self-respecting banker. This is a custom-made waistcoat, probably made of tweed. The kind of thing Katharine Hepburn would have worn tucked into high-waisted pants.

This season, heritage brand Schoffel is expanding its operations and has created a women’s waistcoat made from British milled Lovat tweed (£269.95, hoeffelcountry.com).

Combined with jeans at the weekend or black trousers during the week, the pleasure of a warm body and unconstricted arms cannot be underestimated.

CHECKMATE

The easiest way to spot a country bumpkin in the wild? A check, of course.

Control in the countryside is what camouflage is to the army: a uniform. And the check is steeped in history.

The Tattersall version is named after the Tattersall Horse Fair, which opened in 1776 and featured horses draped in checked blankets.
