Mr. Huffman, who worked on a travel site, was not eager to return. Reddit was a headache. It was experiencing one revolving door of top executives. The vast community of users was belligerent towards management. Reddit’s ownership was also complicated and its technology lagged behind the competition.

“I came across the burning building,” Mr. Huffman said in a 2017 post podcast in which he describes his return.

This month, Reddit is poised to hit the stock market in one of the first tech IPOs of the year. His move stands out. Unlike a recent crop of startups focused squarely on artificial intelligence, the 19-year-old company is a throwback to an earlier era of social media. It is also trying to go public at a time when investors are skeptical of its technology offerings.

But what’s most striking is that Reddit can be made public at all.

After getting into social media early on, the San Francisco-based company stagnated for years. The country faced questions and controversies due to its liberal attitude towards freedom of expression. It struggled to build a viable business, and initially succeeded resistant to advertising – until that wasn’t the case anymore.

After Mr. Huffman returned, the company’s revenues rose from $12 million to more than $800 million a year, and the number of employees from 80 to 2,000. But Mr. Huffman continued to encounter obstacles. When he raised fees for independent developers using Reddit’s data last June, many moderators on the site revolted by shutting down parts of the platform. And questions have been raised about the company’s role in spreading disinformation.

“Reddit has managed to survive, almost in spite of itself,” said Ellen Pao, a former CEO of Reddit who runs Project Include, a Silicon Valley nonprofit focused on diversity.

When Reddit began a roadshow this week to appeal to potential investors, the hurdles it faced were clear. The company said it aimed to raise up to $748 million in its offering, which sold about 22 million shares for $31 to $34 each, according to a filing. That would bring its valuation to about $6.4 billion, below the $10 billion it raised in a private funding round in 2021.

Skepticism about the IPO was seen in a well-known Reddit community called WallStreetBets forum where people discuss stocks and trading, and that has contributed to the rise of ‘meme stocks’. Some commentators said that Reddit had not proven that it could monetize its users or its data.

“HOW CAN I CUT THIS DUMPSTER FIRE STOCK!” one WallStreetBets user wrote last month. (Reddit quoted the forum as a risk factor in its regulatory filings, warning that this could cause “extreme volatility” in the company’s stock price.)

Others said the public markets were hungry for tech offerings like Reddit. “It feels like there is enough demand for a great IPO story,” said Barrett Daniels, co-leader of USIPO Services at Deloitte. “The reluctance here is to be a guinea pig.”

Mr. Huffman and Alexis Ohanian founded Reddit in 2005 from a dorm room at the University of Virginia. They wanted to create a start-up that would allow people to pre-order food via a mobile phone, called My Mobile Menu or MMM.

Mr. Graham and Ms. Livingston turned down the food ordering proposal, but helped the founders envision what would become Reddit: a social message board where links could be shared.

Reddit is reminiscent of old-fashioned online message boards and forums. With more than 73 million daily users, it consists largely of text-based forums, divided into different topics of interest, called ‘subreddits’. Employees also had a laissez-faire attitude toward moderating statements on the site, which sometimes landed the company in hot water. Some subreddits were toxic and devoted to racist themes or non-consensual nudes, the kind of content advertisers found abhorrent. Many employees were against data collection and more invasive forms of advertising.

“The community continued to grow, but there was just no product innovation,” Mr. Lin said. “It stagnated a bit.”

In 2011, Condé Nast’s parent company, Advance Publications, made Reddit an independent entity after recognizing that the site needed “start-up energy,” Mr. Lin said.

Yishan Wong, a former Facebook and PayPal engineer, joined Reddit as CEO in 2012 to boost the site. He later brought in Ms. Pao, a former venture capitalist, to work on business development and partnerships.

Mr. Wong helped jump-start Reddit’s development of mobile applications for the iPhone. Because Reddit had been without an official mobile app for so long, independent developers had created their own versions of a Reddit app that users could download for a fee.

When Mr. Wong left Reddit in 2014, Ms. Pao stepped in as interim director. She began changing some of the site’s free speech policies and invested resources into building up the advertising business, which angered many of Reddit’s users. she believed had exceeded.

Pakistan’s newly elected parliament has approved Shehbaz Sharif as prime minister Sunday, inaugurating his second term in that role and capping weeks of turmoil — and putting into motion a government facing economic and political challenges that are likely to leave the country in turmoil for years to come.

His selection also brings a crossroads in the role of Pakistan’s powerful military, long seen as an invisible hand guiding the country’s politics and previously influencing election results. Analysts say public confidence in Sharif’s government is low.

“The government is seen as doomed,” said Talat Hussain, a political analyst based in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital.

Mr Sharif won 201 votes in the national assembly, while his nearest rival, Omar Ayub, a supporter of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, received 92 votes.

Before the voting began, Mr Sharif arrived in the main hall, accompanied by his older brother, Nawaz, who had also been elected to the National Assembly. The two brothers sat together in the front row, a reminder that the elder Sharif, himself a three-time prime minister, remains influential and is likely to wield power behind the scenes.

The proceedings began with a loud protest in support of Mr Khan. Several Khan supporters sat in front of the speaker’s podium to chant slogans; many others waved pictures of Mr Khan as they too shouted slogans in support of the cricket star turned politician.

Mr Sharif’s party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which he leads with his family and which is currently the military’s preferred party, failed to win the most seats in Pakistan’s national elections a month ago. That honor went to candidates linked to a party led by Mr Khan, which the military had tried to sideline.

Despite this unrest – a fierce rebuke to the military – the PMLN managed to put together a coalition with other major parties to lead the government.

Still, Mr. Sharif’s government will face continued doubts about its legitimacy following mounting accusations that the military tampered with vote counts in dozens of races to tilt them in favor of his party and away from Mr. Khan’s party. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, to overturn.

Najam Sethi, a prominent Pakistani political analyst, said the longevity of the Sharif coalition government depended on the military chief’s support.

“As things stand, the military leadership and the coalition parties have no choice but to stick together because they both stand to lose if one falters. As long as General Asim Munir is army chief, the Shehbaz-led government will survive periods of instability,” Sethi said.

Another challenge: The country’s economy has been teetering on the brink of collapse for years, with inflation hitting a record high last spring. A bailout from the International Monetary Fund has kept the economy afloat, but that program expires this month and the new government will have to secure a new long-term plan from the IMF.

Any potential deal – which Aqdas Afzal, an economist based in Karachi, said would have to be “in the region” of $6 billion to $8 billion – will most likely require new austerity measures that could fuel public frustration.

In parliament, leaders of Mr. Khan’s party have also vowed to serve as a powerful opposition — and possibly a spoiler.

“Our priority will be to free our leaders and bring them to parliament,” Mr Ayub said, referring to Mr Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a former foreign minister who is also jailed.

The party’s supporters, boosted by its election success, may also take to the streets to pressure the government to release Mr Khan, who is serving multiple sentences on charges including leaking state secrets. Mr Khan has pledged to appeal these convictions, which he says are politically motivated, and his party has promised legal challenges to some election results.

The new Prime Minister said after Sunday’s vote that the country faces major challenges, but also offers opportunities. Noting that the economy remained the main challenge, he pledged to attract investments and create a business-friendly environment.

Mr Sharif, whose first term as prime minister came after lawmakers ousted Mr Khan in a no-confidence vote in April 2022, is known for his efficient management. As chief minister of Punjab, the country’s largest province, he oversaw several major infrastructure projects.

Unlike his brother Nawaz, who served as prime minister for three terms and has fallen out with the country’s generals several times, Mr Sharif has been respectful of the military. During his previous term as prime minister, the military further entrenched its role in government and increased its influence on policymaking.

In June 2021, Mr Sharif approved the creation of a governing council aimed at attracting foreign investment, a move widely seen as an attempt by the military to have a more direct say over economic policy. The army chief, General Munir, is a member of that body, the Special Investment Facilitation Council.

Mr. Sharif also approved a policy giving the country’s intelligence agency the power to approve or deny appointments and posts of government officials. That has increased his pervasive influence not only in politics but also in the civil service, analysts say.

In the wake of the election unrest, analysts say the military’s future role is an open question. But most agree that a weak civilian government will make it easier for the generals to reassert their control and exert an even heavier hand politically if they wish.

“Civil-military relations in Pakistan – including relations between the military and society – will not be the same as before,” said Adil Najam, professor of international affairs at Boston University. “What they will become is what concerns every political player in Pakistan and that must also be at the top of the minds of the top brass of the Pakistani military.”

Dwayne Johnson shared a memory of his father Rocky on social media on Friday in honor of Black History Month.

The actor, 51, who is in talks to reprise his role as Maui in a Moana sequel, shared a video of his father’s victory in the ring, with Zac Brown’s tear-jerking song My Old Man among the action.

In a heartfelt post, The Rock, who followed his father into the wrestling ring, wrote, “I’m just delivering flowers to heaven to my old man, Rocky “Soulman” Johnson.”

The wrestling champion explained, “My father, along with ‘Mr USA’ Tony Atlas, made professional wrestling history by becoming the first ever Black Heavyweight Tag Team Champion for the @wwe.” They won the championship on December 10, 1983.

Ten tijde van Bobby’s verdwijning vertelde de directeur van het kamp aan verslaggevers dat Bobby ging vissen en er niet in slaagde een raadgever en andere kampeerders terug naar de lodge te volgen. Dagen later beklommen verschillende adviseurs en jongens Mount Meeker en verkenden het gebied rond de 3.352,8 meter hoge hoogtemarkering voor Bobby, maar dat lukte ook niet. 7 Rudi Moder

Rudi Moder, een 27-jarige bergbeklimmer uit West-Duitsland, begon op 13 februari 1983 aan een solo-ski-bergtocht naar Cameron Pass in het Rocky Mountain National Park. Moder zou naar verwachting binnen twee of drie nachten terugkeren en werd door zijn collega’s als vermist opgegeven. huisgenoten toen hij niet terugkeerde.

Zoekteams werden echter geconfronteerd met uitdagingen als gevolg van hevige sneeuwval, waardoor hun pogingen om hem in de Never Summer Mountains te lokaliseren werden belemmerd. 6 Keith Reinhard

Keith Reinhard, een 50-jarige sportjournalist uit Algonquin, Illinois, nam negentig dagen verlof op van de Dagelijkse heraut om te werken en te recupereren in Silver Plume, Colorado. Reinhard verdween later op 7 augustus 1988. Reinhard woonde destijds achter in een verlaten katholieke kerk en verkocht gematteerd foto’s, terwijl hij ook een roman aan het schrijven was. Reinhard wordt door vrienden beschreven als een vrije geest die ondanks zijn huwelijk alleen naar Colorado ging.

Nadat hij een wandeling had gemaakt in het gebied ten zuiden van de Interstate 70, werd Reinhard nooit meer gezien. Hij droeg vrijetijdskleding en gymschoenen en was van plan naar de top van Pendleton Mountain te wandelen. Toen Reinhard de volgende dag niet terugkeerde, werd een wijdverbreide grond- en luchtzoektocht begonnen. De zoektocht naar Reinhard werd op 14 augustus 1988 stopgezet, nadat honderden zoekers meer dan 10.000 manuren hadden geregistreerd zonder ook maar één aanwijzing te ontdekken. Toen een zoekvliegtuig neerstortte, waarbij één van de twee om het leven kwam en een ander gewond raakte, werd de zoektocht afgeblazen.

Reinhards beste vriend voelde dat Reinhard was gevallen en zich nog ergens in de bergen bevond. Anderen hebben verschillende theorieën voorgesteld over wat er met Reinhard is gebeurd. De zoon van Reinhard denkt bijvoorbeeld dat Reinhard tijdens het wandelen met vals spel te maken heeft gehad.

De Reinhard-zaak van het Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office is nog steeds open. De zoon van Reinhard plaatste een plaquette in het gebied van het Rocky Mountains National Park met de woorden van zijn vader: ‘O God, ik wil ronddwalen. Ik wil ronddwalen tot ik sterf. 5 Tom Jong

Vreemd genoeg ging de roman waar Keith Reinhard aan werkte toen hij verdween over Tom Young, een andere man die het jaar daarvoor vermist was geraakt in het gebied van het Rocky Mountains National Park. Young, een eigenaar van een boekwinkel in Silver Plume, Colorado, werd in september 1987 vermist.

Helaas werden het lichaam van Young, evenals de stoffelijke resten van zijn hond, in juli 1988 buiten Silver Plume ontdekt. ​​Beiden werden in het hoofd geschoten. 4 Brian Joseph Perri

In juli 2018 werd Brian Perri als vermist opgegeven nadat hij ging wandelen in het Rocky Mountain National Park. Voordat hij verdween, sms’te Perri een foto van zichzelf op de top van Mount Meeker naar een vriend. Op de foto droeg Perri een hoed, een zonnebril en een rugzak. Op het moment van zijn verdwijning had hij minimale uitrusting bij zich. Rangers vonden zijn auto later op de parkeerplaats bij de Sandbeach Lake Trailhead.

Het Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue-team voerde, samen met het Larimer County Search and Rescue-team en het Rocky Mountain Rescue-team, zoekopdrachten uit om Perri te lokaliseren. Een hondenteam van Larimer County Search and Rescue sloot zich aan bij de zoekacties met 54 personen. 3 Ryan Albert

Een familielid meldde Ryan Albert uit New Jersey in oktober 2018 als vermist nadat hij ging wandelen in de Rocky Mountains. Albert, een senior aan de Rowan Universiteit in Glassboro, werd voor het laatst gezien in donkere kleding met een rugzak. Al snel werd er gezocht naar Albert, die te laat was van een trektocht door het binnenland met plannen om mogelijk Longs Peak te beklimmen.

De huurauto van Albert werd kort daarna ontdekt bij de Longs Peak-trailhead van het park. Het zoekteam kreeg te maken met uitdagingen, waaronder onzekerheid over de exacte route van Albert en zware weersomstandigheden, waardoor de zoektocht later werd opgeschort.

Maanden later vonden parkwachters op patrouille nabij Longs Peak in een gebied genaamd de Trough een handschoen die overeenkwam met het merk dat Albert vermoedelijk droeg. Vervolgens ontdekte een team van vier parkwachters op 30 mei 2019 het lichaam van Albert bedekt met sneeuw op een hoogte van 3749 meter, ongeveer 305 meter onder het Ledges-gedeelte van de Keyhole Route. 2 Russel Jacobs

Op 16 september 2022 vertrok Russell Jacobs om te gaan wandelen op Longs Peak in het Rocky Mountain National Park. Jacobs nam later contact op met zijn vriend om hem te vertellen dat hij aan het wandelen was en verdwaald was, waarbij hij zijn bezorgdheid uitte over het weer omdat hij niet voorbereid was op winterse omstandigheden of omdat hij sliep op een hoogte boven 3.962 meter.

Jacobs had ook contact met parkwachters die zijn locatie vaststelden en hoorden dat Jacobs probeerde richting de Agnes Vaille Shelter te gaan. Parkwachters verloren vervolgens het contact met Jacobs. Reddingswerkers gingen op zoek naar Jacobs, maar werden uitgedaagd door winterse weersomstandigheden. Het zoekteam zette ook ‘s nachts een schuilplaats op voor het geval Jacobs nog steeds op pad was om de trailhead te bereiken.

Werknemers van het Rocky Mountain National Park hebben het lichaam van Jacobs geborgen en hem overgebracht naar het Boulder County Coroner’s Office. Jacobs werd ongeveer 24 meter boven het Ledges-gedeelte van het park gevonden na een lang weekend onder ongunstige weersomstandigheden.

Het Ledges-gedeelte van het park ligt vlakbij de Keyhole Notch, die richels bevat die worden geflankeerd door een klif. Geschilderde markeringen op de rotsen in dit gebied helpen wandelaars bij het navigeren. Sneeuw en duisternis, waar Jacobs mee te maken heeft, kunnen het navigeren door dit gebied veel moeilijker maken.[9]

Op 28 september 2023 verliet de 49-jarige Chad William Pallansch Fort Collins, Colorado, om aan een ambitieuze route van 45 kilometer te beginnen, waarbij hij de Continental Divide moest oversteken en gevestigde parkpaden moest doorkruisen. Pallansch had deze route nog niet eerder geprobeerd, maar was een fitte hardloper die zowel trailrunning- als marathonervaring had.

Zoekinspanningen omvatten luchtverkenning, drones, hittegevoelige vluchten met vaste vleugels en honden die op verschillende locaties in het park werden ingezet. Omdat winterse weersomstandigheden, waaronder sneeuw, het zoeken op de grond belemmerden, namen reddingswerkers hun toevlucht tot luchtmaatregelen. Zoekoperaties werden later opgeschort. Pallansch wordt door NamUs nog steeds als vermist aangemerkt.[10]
