Bihar News: In a bizarre incident, a pond was ‘stolen’ in Bihar’s Darbhanga district overnight and a hut was built on the spot where the pond once stood. According to reports, the pond, which was used by locals for fishing and farming purposes, was filled with sand overnight and a small hut was built on the area.

The local administration said the pond was allegedly stolen by the land mafia, who razed the area by filling the water body with sand and other materials and later built a hut on the site.

The incident came to light when locals alerted police after hearing the movement of trucks and heavy machinery at night, reports said.

‘Talab gayab ho gaya’

“Talab gayab ho gaya (the pond has disappeared into thin air),” said a local resident, expressing his amazement at how a water body disappeared overnight as if it never existed.

Images circulating online showed a rudimentary hut built where the pond once stood. The entire area has been razed, probably using heavy machinery, and all evidence that a pond ever existed on the site has been erased.

Police say the pond likely filled over the course of a few weeks, apparently overnight.

“Locals said the filling took place in the last 10 to 15 days. It happened mainly during the night hours,” said a senior police officer.

He said there is no record of who owns this piece of land. “We have no information about who owns this land.”

The bizarre ‘robbery’ comes amid earlier reports of the theft of an entire bridge and stretches of road in Bihar.

The police say they have filed a report in this regard and the strange ‘theft’ is being investigated.
