500 passengers stranded in Thoothukudi district

As mentioned earlier, 500 train passengers have been stranded in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district due to heavy rains. A Chennai-bound train carrying 800 passengers had left Tiruchendur on December 17 but was terminated at Srivaikuntam station around 9.19 pm. Of the 800 passengers, 300 were rescued by the district administration and shifted to government schools in the immediate area. However, the 500 passengers are still stranded and awaiting evacuation because the overcrowded bridge did not allow the transportation of the remaining passengers. out.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team from Tuticorin and the state government officials have been approached by the Southern Railway to provide maximum assistance in rescuing the still stranded passengers; the priority for now is to provide food and water to the rescued passengers. One hundred passengers received food from local residents, while the remaining 200 received food parcels from the state police.

IMD has issued red alert in four districts

Due to excessively heavy rainfall in the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert in four districts. These districts are Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi. According to the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), a cyclonic storm is observed over the Comorin area and its surroundings, extending to mid-troposphere.

Massive waterlogging was reported in the state after four districts received heavy rainfall on Sunday. Due to the bad weather, all educational institutions were closed on Monday. Several trains were completely or partially canceled as floodwaters entered train stations. According to the updates from IMD, Thiruchendur in Tuticorin district recorded as much as 606 mm of rain till 1.30 am on Monday. Most places in southern Tamil Nadu have received light to moderate rain since Saturday (December 16).
