Tamil Nadu Rains: Schools in Chennai closed due to heavy rains; Several districts are on orange alert
Several areas in Chennai, including Velachery, Kodambakkam, Teynampet, Nungambakkam, Alandur and Anna University, have received 7-2 cm of rain in the last 24 hours.
Tamil Nadu Rains: As heavy rain lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday, the regional meteorological center here warned of more showers in the next three days. The persistent rainfall surprised office visitors and students. Parts of south Chennai were flooded for more than one and a half hours during peak hours due to incessant rain. Meanwhile, the Chennai district administration has declared school holiday in the capital for today due to heavy rains.
The news agency quoted Additional Director General of Meteorology S. Balachandran as saying this PTI“Heavy rain is likely to occur at certain places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Theni and Dindigul districts during the next 24 hours. Heavy rain is also likely at certain places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Tiruppur and Ramanathapuram districts.
At least two people were killed while 18 others were injured in a light incident in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district on Friday. Several areas in Chennai, including Velachery, Kodambakkam, Teynampet, Nungambakkam, Alandur and Anna University, have received 7-2 cm of rain in the last 24 hours. The areas experienced water stagnation due to poor road conditions and incomplete interconnected works on stormwater drains in the areas. Residents were furious that flooding can be noticed even during moderate rainfall.
From October 1 to date, the region recorded 12 cm of rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon, against the normal rainfall of 19 cm, which is 40 percent less than normal.
Earlier, the IMD stated that due to cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka, states in South India may receive heavy rainfall.
