Earlier on Wednesday, Mahmood Ahmed, a senior official in the Uttarakhand Road and Transport Department, said the drill (or earth boring machine) that was switched on at 12.45 pm had drilled 18 meters so far.

“I am very pleased to announce that 39 meters of drilling has been completed. “Welding is the most important thing. This takes time. It doesn’t take much time to drill. Due to this, it has taken almost 15 hours from late night to dispatch 18 meters of pipeline i.e. three sections,” he added.

“An additional 800mm pipe has also been pushed 21 meters into the tunnel. If there are no obstacles, big news could come tonight or tomorrow morning. An iron bar was also found with the rubble. We are happy that this (rod) has not caused any problems for us.”
