Chennai: After the celebration of Diwali, a pile of firecracker waste piled up on the roads of Chennai in Tamil Nadu on Monday morning. The city’s air was also filled with haze as residents continued to set off firecrackers late into the night, violating the timing fixed by the state government. It is worth noting that the use of fireworks was only allowed from 6am to 7am and then from 7pm to 8pm.

Before Diwali, the Greater Chennai Corporation had urged people to dispose of firecracker waste properly. In 2022, the southern city witnessed the collection of approximately 235 tons of cracker waste, underscoring the importance of responsible waste management during the festive season. Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan stated that fireworks waste would be sent to an incinerator instead of landfills.
