Madhya Pradesh News: A major fire engulfed the Madhya Pradesh Secretariat complex ‘Vallabh Bhawan’ in the state capital Bhopal on Saturday morning, which was successfully doused after more than five hours of grueling efforts by firefighters even as the Opposition Congress alleged that the BJP dispensation was on the somehow in the state caused the inferno in an attempt to ‘hide their sins’.

According to reports, the fire broke out on the third floor of a building in ‘Vallabh Bhawan’ around 9.30 am on Saturday morning. Fortunately, however, the building was almost empty as the government offices were closed over the weekend.

They said some sanitation workers at gates 5 and 6 saw smoke coming from the building around 9:30 a.m. and alerted authorities.

Images shared on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke and towering flames emanating from the Secretariat building as army personnel, National Disaster Response Force and police firefighters joined the municipal fire brigade in the extinguishing operation.

The blaze was finally brought under control after nearly five hours of a grueling firefighting operation, officials said. “The fire has almost been extinguished,” Bhopal Municipal Fire Officer Rameshwar Neel told news agency PTI around 3 pm.

The official said around 40 to 50 fire tenders and water tankers (tankers), including some from the army, were involved in the firefighting effort.

Asked whether the bags of papers lying on the secretariat building had been removed before the fire broke out, Neel said he had no information about that.

Congress drives ‘conspiracy’

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress alleged that the BJP government orchestrated the secretariat building fire in a bid to “hide the sins of corruption” and destroy evidence.

Speaking to reporters, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari said the fire was caused by the BJP in an attempt to destroy evidence of corruption.

“The government is behind this fire. This is done to hide the sins of corruption. Such an incident has happened four times before,” Patwari said.

Patwari and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Umang Sarang staged a sit-in outside the Secretariat for a few hours, seeking a CBI probe into the fire.

Fire ‘orchestrated’ to cover up ‘fraud’

Sarang alleged that the fire was an attempt to cover up “scams” under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and former CM Shivraj Chouhan.

“I want to say that they want to hide all the scams of Mohan Yadav and Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Shivraj ji does not want his files to go to Mohan Yadav,” the Congress leader alleged.

Patwari claimed that this was the fifth fire incident at Vallabh Bhawan since the BJP came to power in the state in 2003.

“Which files were burned? From which departments?” the Congress leader asked in a statement, alleging that the fire was a “conspiracy” by the BJP government, steeped in “corruption, indebtedness and crime” to destroy the evidence.

State BJP spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi dismissed Patwari’s tirade and stated that the opposition party has not leveled any allegation of corruption in all these years and should instead look at the track record of the UPA government.

CM Yadav issues directive

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mohan Yadav directed officials to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in future.

“I was in Bhopal and heard that a fire broke out on the third floor of the old Vallabh Bhawan building. I have sought information from the collector and asked the chief secretary to keep an eye on the situation. The fire has been brought under control,” Prime Minister Yadav told reporters.

“A directive has been issued to prevent such incidents and to ensure that no papers or important files are destroyed. I hope such incidents do not repeat,” he added.
