A major shopping center in Sydney’s west has been evacuated due to a fire, disrupting thousands of Christmas shoppers.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said firefighters attended Penrith Westfield about 1.20pm on Sunday after a fire broke out at a food court in the popular shopping destination.

It is believed that as many as 3,000 people were evacuated as firefighters tried to control the blaze.

One person was treated by ambulance for smoke inhalation.

The fire was extinguished around 1:50 p.m.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
