LLOYDS has told staff to stop using the word ‘widow’ – despite owning Scottish Widows.

The couch fears that the word “may evoke unwarranted personal memories of trauma and disturbing situations.”

It is suggested that the term ‘separated’ be used instead.

The advice is contained in the bank’s inclusive language guide, which also warns that the technical term ‘penetration testing’ could be considered gender biased.

But Mark Brown of the staff union said: ‘The more we allow people to claim they are offended because they disagree with the use of certain words or phrases, the more they will take the opportunity to be offended.

‘Lloyds engages in the most hypocritical form of virtue signalling.

“If it really believed in using inclusive language, it would change the Scottish Widows brand immediately.

“The fact that that won’t happen tells you everything you need to know about ‘inclusive language’ at Lloyds Banking Group.

“It’s a gimmick – Lloyds is one woke up laughingstock.”

A spokesperson for Lloyds said: “The voluntary inclusivity tool is designed as a self-moderated way for colleagues to explore how people think about different words and phrases.

“As usual with crowdsourcing ideas, some are better than others.”
