Woman booked a one-way flight to travel 1,700 miles for her father’s wedding – before realising she had made a huge mistake

A woman who flew 1,700 miles to see her father get married got a nasty surprise when she landed at the wedding destination, only to discover she got there a year early.

Llarissa Pye, 29, originally from Cheshire but living in the Canary Islands, was thrilled to discover her father and his partner of three years, both 53, were engaged in December 2023.

The Brit has lived in Lanzarote for the past nine years after falling in love with the place following a friend’s birthday trip.

When her father called to give her the dates for the wedding, she misheard him and thought he had said the wedding would take place the following Saturday, which happened to be his birthday – so she rushed to get her £200 one-way flight to book.

Despite much further communication from the first phone call, no one realized Llarissa’s mistake (least of all her) until she was on the plane on May 31 and about to take off.

Llarissa arrived in Britain to find she was a year early for the wedding; a mistake that got her family into trouble. Despite her mistake, she decided to make a trip of it and enjoy a mini-break in Britain before flying back to Lanzarote on June 4.

Llarissa, who works for a bike rental company and lives in Puerto del Carmen, said: “So when they booked the dates it was around midnight for me.

‘My father must have said, ‘Next year is my birthday.’ But I heard: ‘We’re sorry it’s so short, we understand if you can’t come.’

‘I had to ask a girl to change shifts at the last minute. I had forwarded my flights, but they didn’t see that it said 2024.

‘On Friday morning I text them and say, ‘I’m at the airport, see you in a few hours.’ They tried to call me, but my phone was in sleep mode.

‘I was about to leave and saw all the messages. I called my father and he said, ‘Llarissa, the wedding isn’t until next year.’ We were just laughing on the phone.”

Llarissa had immediately booked the four-hour journey back to her hometown of Frodsham, Cheshire, when she thought her father had said he would tie the knot on June 2.

When her father called her to tell her the dates for the wedding, she misheard him and thought he had said the wedding would take place the following Saturday.

Llarissa said: “They still laugh about it now. Most people have said, “How did you do that?” It’s not that we didn’t communicate.

‘I think a year is a short term for my father. I now have time to correct my tan lines. It’s all fun. I am normally quite organized. I’ve never been a year early.’
