It may not be the trend you expected, but it is the trend that has been predicted – wearing underwear as pants – and one of the fashionistas driving this trend is non-binary actor Emma Corrin.

Emma, who is best known for her role as Diana, Princess of Wales in the Netflix royal drama The Crown, was spotted walking the catwalk for Miu Miu at the Paris fashion show.

They wore sequined panties, paired with a cream turtleneck, bleached blonde hair and orange heels.

Later that year, at the Venice Film Festival, they debuted a more grungy version of the look.

This time, the stage actor wore khaki briefs and matching cardigan, with black tights and black brogues, both looks detailed in a recent episode of Women’s Hour.

The design house leading the charge for underwear as outerwear is Miu Miu, as evidenced by the autumn/winter 2023 show, where models alongside Emma Corrin wore sparkling briefs.

After the show, the brand’s creative director Miuccia Prada complained that her age prevented her from wearing the look herself.

Speaking to Vogue after the show, she said: ‘If I was younger I’d go out in panties!’

In that case, she was probably thrilled to see Emma don the look when she went to Venice a few months later.

Miuccia Prada isn’t the only major fashion voice promoting the daring look.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Julia Hobbs, British Vogue’s acting director of European fashion films, also spoke about the look.

She described the look as “very elemental,” suggesting it was a throwback to a bygone era.

And, she said, this bold trend represented “people wanting to be themselves in the way they dress.”

Julia added: ‘I think what we’re seeing now is a kind of return to very basic clothing and we’re seeing a revival of a 1960s look, where simple black panties are worn over tights.”

The fashionista talked about wearing a version of the outfit to work — noting that barely an eyebrow was raised when she donned the ensemble to the Vogue office.

However, on her way to work she did receive ‘a few mocking looks on the subway’.

Julia summarized the look at Woman’s Hour: ‘We need to have confidence in embracing this and I think it will be interesting to look at the popularity of this trend in the context of Skims.”

She added, “I think it ties into this attitude of ‘take me as I am’ and feeling good about yourself and owning it.”
