A look back at Lady Sarah Chatto’s very quick marriage to Daniel Chatto

There were few relatives closer to the late Queen Elizabeth than her niece, Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones.

It was even said that the Queen ‘adored’ Princess Margaret’s daughter.

For all her importance to the royal family, her 1994 wedding to Daniel Chatto was decidedly understated compared to other royal weddings of the time – and since.

Daniel and Sarah were married on July 14, 1994, at St. Stephen Walbrook Church in London, in front of just 200 guests.

Instead of flower girls, Lady Sarah had three bridesmaids: her cousin's daughter Zara Phillips, her half-sister Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones and her friend Tara Noble Singh.

This was the first time the location was chosen for a royal wedding.

For her dress, Lady Sarah chose a creation by the then much sought-after Jasper Conran.

Since then described as one of the most timeless royal designs, it consisted of layers of ivory Georgette fabric with a square-cut, corseted bodice and long elegant sleeves.

Lady Sarah also had dresses made by the same designer for the three bridesmaids: Zara Phillips (daughter of Princess Anne), her own half-sister, Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones and her friend Tara Noble Singh.

The bridesmaid dresses looked strikingly similar to the bride’s own wedding dress, all with long sleeves, full skirts and a corset bodice that tied at the back.

Striking differences were the round neckline and the bright pink and pastel flowers in the bridesmaid’s hair. Lady Sarah carried a white bouquet.

Although the late Queen Elizabeth II is said to have loaned the royal bride a diadem from her private collection, Lady Sarah chose to wear her own tiara, specially made for the wedding by Wartski.

The Snowdon Floral Tiara consists of three diamond brooches with flowers and additional floral elements.

The brooches were a gift from her father, Antony, to her mother, Margaret, in 1960 on the occasion of their wedding.

The ceremony at St Stephen Walbrook was famously short, lasting just 30 minutes.

The couple’s driver was even caught off guard, forcing the newlyweds to wait as they left the church.

The wedding came at a turbulent time for the royal family, with the Queen’s 1992 ‘annus horribilis’ – in which both Prince Charles and Prince Andrew separated from their wives – still remembered.

Sarah and Daniel’s wedding made headlines as it was the first event Charles and Princess Diana attended since he admitted to having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

Other senior royals among the guests included Lady Sarah’s mother, Princess Margaret, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the late Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother, Princess Anne and Prince Edward with his bride-to-be Sophie Rhys-Jones.

The wedding reception was held at the Queen Mother’s London residence, Clarence House, for the reception. The couple spent their honeymoon in India, where they met for the first time.

Lady Sarah, one of the more private members of the royal family, does not perform official duties.

The couple have two sons, Samuel, born in 1996, and Arthur, born in 1999.
