Boat Story viewers are labeling the dark comedy about cocaine smuggling as ‘the best thing the BBC has done in years’ – and comparing its ‘twisted’ and violent plot to Tarantino films

The BBC’s latest thriller, Boat Story, has been labeled ‘incredible’ and a ‘masterpiece’ by fans.

The violent thriller, laced with black humor, which debuted last night, is about two strangers who come across a stash of drugs in a washed-up boat while walking their dogs.

It is the latest series from Harry and Jack Williams, the brothers who created The Missing and its spin-off Baptiste and were also behind last year’s most watched drama The Tourist.

While the first episode aired on BBC1 last night, the entire series appeared on BBC iPlayer, with some fans saying they ‘watched the whole show in one go’ and comparing it to Quentin Tarantino films.

‘The first episode of Boat Story was excellent. Dark, funny, compelling enough to turn the page,” said one viewer.

The show tells the story of how Samuel (Peep Show’s Paterson Joseph) convinces Janet (Breeders’ Daisy Haggard) that they should steal the drugs, sell them and split the proceeds.

It would alleviate gambling addict Samuel’s financial problems and give Janet something that feels like happiness after a series of terrible setbacks.

But their split-second decision turns their lives upside down and soon their rural neighborhood is haunted by a sadistic drug lord, his machine gun-wielding gangsters and other murderous thugs desperate to know where the stash has gone.

And they all happily dispatch anyone they think is involved.

The idea for this wild story came from real-life incidents, such as the drugs recently found on the beaches of the Isle of Wight and the running aground of the SS politician that inspired the comedy classic Whiskey Galore! from 1949.

‘Binge watched Boat Story on BBC iplayer. If it doesn’t win every BAFTA, something is wrong. 10/10.

‘Casting, dialogue, humor, story, visuals, score are all epic. The best thing I’ve seen on the BBC in years,” said no one.

‘Just watched the first episode. I loved it! Very dark, Guy Ritchie-esque. #boatstory

Many called star Daisy Haggard “well on her way to national treasure status” and called her acting “fantastic” and “brilliant.”

Daisy herself said that the drama is ‘exciting, stressful, daring, imaginative, surprising, bloody, playful and very funny’.

Others compared the show to Hollywood thrillers, saying it was both “Ritchie-esque” and “like Tarantino.”

“I enjoyed #BoatStory but alive this might have been the most violent thing I’ve ever seen on BBC1,” said one.

“How good was this as a Sunday Nights TV was wide awake afterwards,” another added.

“Probably the most violent and shocking thing I’ve ever seen on TV,” said a third.

‘Quirky and very, very dark, think Fargo crossed with The League of Gentleman/Inside number 9. I love it! Excellent cast,” said another.

‘The first episode of Boat Story was excellent. Dark, funny, compelling and absolutely 100% Farage-free. Daisy Haggard is well on her way to National Treasure status. #BoatStory,” said another.

‘Of course I had to watch it all in one go #BoatStory Brilliant. Of course, because that also applies to @daisy_haggard. Definitely a bit gory, but also funny and clever,’.
