The Met Office has warned that heavy snow, ice and rain could hit Britain today as almost the entire country is battered.

As many as seven weather warnings have been issued for much of Britain today bitter cold blow – with up to 25 cm of snow falling in parts.

Brits are being prepared for wintry conditions and chaos on their Thursday morning commute.

An orange warning for snow has been set Stoke-on-TrentSheffield and Leeds from 12pm to 6pm.

The weather service has prepared much of north Wales for the consequences snow and ice, as an orange warning is also issued for the region.

That will be today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., says the With office.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice also cover the country on Thursday with Newcastle, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, York, Leeds, NottinghamLeicester and Birmingham set to be affected.

Scotland and Northern Ireland are also affected, as well as surrounding areas, from 6am on Thursday until 3pm on Friday.

Delays and cancellations of train and bus services are expected.

The Met Office has said there is also a growing risk of vehicles having to be abandoned if they become stranded.

Slippery surfaces can cause injuries and rural communities can be cut off by heavy snow.

To avoid the snow and ice, rain warnings have also been introduced.

Heavy rain will hit the south of England Wales from 2 a.m. today to 6 a.m. Friday.

The Met Office said: “Rain, sleet and snow will move northwards until Thursday.

“Snow is confined to North Wales, Northern Ireland and Northern England, mainly on high ground.

Tips for staying safe in snow and ice

The Met Office has issued advice on how to stay safe in the snow and ice.

What should you do if you have to drive somewhere?

  • Plan your route
  • Check for delays and road closures
  • Allow more time to prepare and check your car before you leave
  • Check windshield wipers, tires and windshield washer fluid
  • Take essential items with you in your car
  • Bring a fully charged cell phone with a car charger or battery pack

Safe driving in the snow

  • Use low beam
  • Accelerate gently, use a low engine speed and shift to a higher gear as quickly as possible
  • Starting in second gear helps prevent wheel slip
  • Maintain a safe and constant speed. Keep your distance from other vehicles
  • Maintain a constant speed on hills. Leave enough space between the cars
  • Use a low gear when going down a slope and try to avoid braking unless necessary
  • Steer into skids. Do not take your hands off the handlebars or press the brakes

Stay safe when you're in lockdown

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to the same temperature both day and night.
  • Turn off electric heaters and extinguish the fire before going to bed to avoid fire hazards
  • Don't forget your pets. Create a place where they can feel comfortable in severe winter weather.
  • Avoid frozen pipes, open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors so that warmer air can circulate around the pipes
  • Stay indoors and wear layers of loose, light, warm clothing instead of bulky clothing
  • Never use a stovetop or oven to heat your home; these can increase carbon monoxide levels

What you can do in the event of a power outage

  • Candles and matches or lighters,
  • Flashlights and batteries,
  • A power pack for mobile phones

If the power goes out, these simple steps can help you deal with the situation:

  • Turn off all electrical appliances that should not be left unattended, ready for when the power comes back on.
  • Leave a light on so that you know when the power outage has been resolved.
  • Check if your neighbors are safe and if they are also experiencing a power outage. If they have power, your travel switch may be activated.
  • Complete. If it is cold, dress warmly and close the interior doors to keep the heat in.
  • Portable heaters are a good alternative if the heating systems fail.

As we head into Friday and the weekend, wintry showers are expected in the north.

Snow and rain will move towards central parts of Britain throughout the day.

The weekend currently looks wet and cloudy for most.
