It was virtually destroyed within seconds when it struck a series of power lines after failing to reach a certain height to safely cross the lines.

According to an unconfirmed report, the pilots were attempting to break a world record for the longest flight in a hot air balloon, but the crash happened during one of the practice flights.

The two pilots on board were bothered by the strong winds throughout the flight as it seemed difficult to navigate as the balloon even touched the ground when flying over a field.

It was also seen by onlookers running wildly and swaying in all directions before the tragic crash near the village of Asureti in eastern Georgia.

Part of the burning balloon quickly fell to the ground while the rest sat smoking and on fire on the current line.

Popular Imedi TV cameraman Misha Bidzinashvili was among the people on board when the tragic crash occurred.

Imedi TV changed its programming schedule to honor the man.

The second was the experienced pilot Revaz Uturgauri, the founder of Sky Travels and Chairman of the Georgian National Aviation Federation.

Uturgauri wrote on his social media before the flight: “We fly all over Georgia, from the Black Sea to the border with Azerbaijan.

“The distance is not very long – about 400 km. But the flight is difficult, because it is mainly over the mountains.”

The third man was Polish pilot Krzysztof Zapart, according to local reports.

According to reports, both pilots have experience flying hot air balloons.

The balloon took off from a stadium in Poti on Wednesday morning and was expected to fly to Kakheti in the east of the country.

Georgian Police have opened an investigation into the deaths as they investigate a suspected violation of basic in-flight safety rules.

This was the first hot air balloon accident in Georgia in almost twenty years.
