British weather: Met Office warns of ‘icy’ weekend with -1C dip before rain moves in – as Brits brace for travel chaos

The British are preparing for an icy weekend with temperatures dropping to -1 degrees Celsius.

Much of the country is expected to wake up to freezing temperatures on Saturday with “local fog and mist“.

The cold conditions swept in from the north overnight, leaving frost on the ground – with early risers having to defrost their cars due to the cold winds.

In spite of the drop in temperatureIt will be a bright start to the day with winter sun and clear skies.

Parts of Scotland This morning will see lows of -2C Manchester dipping to 1C and London a bitter 2C.

Aberdeen residents are being warned to dress warmly as they wake up to a bitter cold of -1 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office predicts that the area will not warm up until around lunchtime.

As the day progresses, the frost will disappear, say the back on dutywith highs of 9C on the south coast nearby Plymouth.

Although conditions appear to have changed compared to Friday’s heavy rain, Britain will soon be lashed by rain again.

From Saturday afternoon some showers will arrive from the west, which will mainly have an influence Wales and southern parts of England.

A Met Office spokesperson said: ‘Sleepy fog and frost will clear, leaving many parts dry with sunny spells.

‘However, showers will occur across western areas and the south coast of England, with showers developing elsewhere during the day.

“[As we head into tonight] Most showers clear in the early evening, leaving a largely dry night with clear spells.

‘Some fog and frost will return. Rain will arrive later in the southwest.”

Looking ahead to Sunday, the frost is expected to clear completely, but more showers are forecast with stronger winds.

The weather service added: “Fog and frost will clear in most areas with sunny spells and isolated showers.

“However, the wet and windy weather in the southwest will gradually spread to other southern areas.”

It comes as travelers and commuters are warned to expect chaos this weekend.

The M25 Dartford Crossing will be closed for a total of seven hours – feared due to the cause stationary traffic.

The planned closure of the QEII Bridge will take place between 10pm and 5am on Saturday, and between 10pm and 5am on Sunday.

National Highways said: “We will be carrying out an extensive program of repair and maintenance work over the coming years to keep journeys safe and reliable for road users.

“To minimize disruption, we carry out our work at night, usually between 10pm and 6am.”

For anyone planning to travel over the bridge, cars between 4.8 and 5 meters can find a clockwise diversion from the M25.
