The survey of 2,000 adults found that more than a quarter (26 percent) find it more difficult to connect with nature now than ten years ago.

And 46 percent of them attribute this to living in cities and built-up areas with less greenery.

While almost six in ten of all respondents believe that no matter how much time they spend in nature, it is never enough.

Walks in the park (58 percent), enjoying a cup of coffee in the garden (39 percent), taking off shoes and walking barefoot (10 percent) are among the ways we connect with the earth.

But as winter approaches, bad weather (40 percent), long work hours (24 percent) and keeping the house clean (16 percent) are factors that keep people from going outside.

The research was commissioned by the Flower Council of Holland, which also collaborated with digital artist Rek0de to create a virtual reinterpretation of three iconic London landmarks – Tate Modern, Tower Bridge and Trellick Tower – transforming them into natural refuges.

A AR filter was also developed so that anyone with a camera phone can see how nature can transform our cityscapes and homes.

Gabrielle Dullaart, from the Flower Council of Holland, said: “Escapism into nature can be found in many forms.

“Nature is the ultimate remedy for our hectic lives; a place where we find peace and rediscover our true selves.

“Spending time in nature, even for a short time, is like pressing the 'reset' button for your mind and soul. It is where we recharge and find clarity.

“As longer nights loom in the coming winter months, it is important that we do not lose contact with nature.”

The survey also found that 63 percent of adults believe it is important to spend time in nature to improve mental health.

While 60 percent believe it is vital for physical well-being, and the same percentage think it can reduce stress levels.

And while 76 percent consider themselves at least somewhat happy as a person, 40 percent of those who don't say more time in nature would help.

Nevertheless, 53 percent find it difficult to get in touch with nature in time, according to the newspaper OnePoll.com facts.

While a whopping 42 percent went so far as to say that people have forgotten how to connect with nature.

Gabrielle Dullaart added: “Amid the chaos of modern life, nature offers a refuge for our well-being. It is the antidote to our daily stress.

“Embracing nature is not just a lifestyle choice, it is a statement of our commitment to a sustainable and harmonious future.

“Even if you can't take a walk in the woods at lunch, filling your home with plants and cut flowers can ensure that you always have greenery nearby and still benefit from the effects.”

Following the findings, Ian Drummond, winner of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, gave his top tips for city dwellers to connect with nature, by listening to recordings of birdsong or bringing art into the home, such as paintings of nature or prints, sculpture, digital art and photography.
