A little girl is in critical condition in hospital after being attacked by a crocodile in Kakadu National Park.

The nine-year-old was flown to the Royal Darwin Hospital near Munmalary Homestead, between the South Alligator and East Alligator Rivers, in Kakadu, after the attack on Saturday.

CareFlight NT said the patient was airlifted from Jabiru by helicopter at 9pm on Saturday in a stable but critical condition with a number of stab wounds after being bitten by the crocodile.

Jabiru is a town of 1,000 inhabitants that was built in 1982 to serve the national park.

“The patient was transported to the Jabiru Community Health Centre, CareFlight's specialist doctor and flight nurse treated the patient at the Jabiru clinic,” a CareFlight spokeswoman said.

St John Ambulance emergency communications manager Craig Garraway told the ABC the child appeared to be OK.

“Probably a lucky escape, I would suggest,” he said.
