Outrage after hot cross buns go on sale at Woolworths and Coles three months before Easter

Australian supermarkets are already full of hot cross buns on the shelves more than three months before Easter – and not everyone is happy about that.

For the first time, Woolworths will be selling Fairy Bread Hot Cross Buns, which come with a packet of sprinkles so customers can add as many as they like.

Brioche Cadbury Chocolate, Indulgent Chocolate buns and a Woolworths favourite, Cadbury Caramilk Hot Cross Buns, are also up for grabs.

The limited edition Fairy Bread and Caramilk come in a four-pack for $5, while the more traditional flavors sell for $4 for a six-pack.

As many as 1.8 million hot cross buns are expected to be sold in the first week, but Aussies were divided over the Easter treat sold on Boxing Day.

Shoppers can purchase a six- or nine-pack of apple cinnamon, fruit-free, chocolate or traditional hot cross buns until January 2 to support the cause.

“Easter eggs are already being sold in my local Woolies supermarket,” said one.

“But remember, if people didn’t buy them right after Christmas, they wouldn’t sell them right after Christmas,” said a second.

“Christmas hasn’t even happened yet but I’m here for it,” wrote a third.

Meanwhile, Coles will be selling special packs of hot cross buns, donating 20p per bag to childhood cancer charity Redkite.

Until January 2, shoppers can purchase a six- or nine-pack of apple cinnamon, fruit-free, chocolate or traditional hot cross buns to support the cause.

Redkite provides essential services to families affected by childhood cancer, including counseling and financial assistance to pay household bills, groceries and fuel.

Coles Bakery general manager Kate Roff said hot cross buns quickly became a post-Christmas staple.

“This year, we are proud to add an extra layer of sweetness through our partnership with Redkite to support families affected by childhood cancer,” she said.

‘By choosing Coles Brand hot cross buns until January 2, customers can enjoy the delicious Easter treat, while supporting Redkite’s important work.’

Coles has raised more than $50 million for charity since 2013, with as many as 8,000 families benefiting from Redkite’s support during the ten-year partnership.

Twins Lily and Rose were separated when Rose was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma and sent to Queensland Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Her mother Cass came with her, leaving Lily behind in northern New South Wales.

When Rose returned, Cass contacted Redkite after noticing that the girls had separation anxiety, increased anger and difficulty sleeping.

The girls were able to benefit from free counseling offered by the service.

Redkite CEO Monique Keighery said they were ‘incredibly grateful’ for the support from Coles and the kindness of customers.

“Together we will ensure that families like Cass, Rose and Lily do not have to face the challenges of a childhood cancer diagnosis alone, which will have a tangible impact.”

Easter is celebrated in Australia on March 31, 2024.
