Environmentalist and founder of Moral Fibers Wendy Graham shared her highly effective ‘homemade weed killer recipe’.

The trick will keep weeds away from your patio without using harsh chemicals and toxic ingredients.

“Weedkiller is one of those things that makes me a little uncomfortable. I have small children, so I don’t like keeping it in the house, and I certainly don’t like using it in the garden,” she said in an interview with Emphatic.

Her sustainable remedy uses three common kitchen items: white vinegar, salt and dish soap.

Each item has a unique purpose to address the annoying problem in your garden.

“The vinegar and salt help dry out the weeds. Meanwhile, the dish soap causes the salty vinegar solution to stick to the weed leaves,” she explains.

The detailed application process for the DIY recipe can be found below.

Keep pets away from the patio after this solution has been sprayed, but it is safe for children to be around.

Leave it on the weeds for at least an hour before rinsing it away.

Rinse off the homemade weed killer by pouring a bucket of boiling water on the weeds.

It is also important to flush the agent away so that local wildlife does not walk over the weeds at night.

Step by step process

  1. Get an empty spray bottle or container.
  2. Add a liter of white vinegar and three large tablespoons of salt.
  3. Stir the mixture until the salt is dissolved.
  4. Add three teaspoons of dish soap.
  5. Spray it on patio weeds on a clear, sunny day when it has not rained recently.
  6. Let the solution sit for at least an hour to fully penetrate the weeds.

Salt and vinegar can damage their paws or cause illness if ingested.

“It’s very effective: within an hour you should notice the weeds starting to wilt,” Wendy said.

They begin to dry out, turn brown and die.

This is a very effective and super easy weed killer that doesn’t involve hours of pulling weeds out of the ground.
