According to the IDFthe dossier revealed the gruesome fate of opposition leader Mahmoud Ishtiwi.

Ishtiwi, the former commander of the Zeitoun Battalion, and member of the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigadesemerged from a long legacy of Hamas loyalists.

He and his family were revered for protecting Hamas leaders like Hamas Mohammed Deif – until Yahya Sinwar came into the picture.

In 2015, Ishtiwi was accused of “immoral” acts, Hamas code for homosexuality, but unlike others who were quickly executed, the former commander remained under arrest for more than a year.

He was charged with embezzlement in connection with this crime and with passing intelligence to the Israelis.

Qassam concluded that Israeli intelligence had exposed Ishtiwi’s homosexuality and accused him of offering information in exchange for keeping his secret.

The IDF claims the new documents reveal the circumstances under which Ishtiwi was interrogated, the torture he suffered and the charges he was forced to admit.

After his brutal execution in 2016, Hamas said in the statement that Ishtiwi had been sentenced to death for “conductual and moral violations to which he confessed.”

But the impressive documents contain notes from Ishtiwi showing that his confession was coerced.

The notes read: ‘The fear gripped me endlessly. I know I’m lying to whoever is at the top of the pyramid.

‘I know that Mohammed Sinwar [Yahya’s younger brother, a senior Hamas commander] is known for its cruelty. He almost buried me in Gaza, in the Shati camp.”

According to the IDF, Ishtiwi described his torture in the notes.

He wrote: “They beat me 400 to 500 times… they kept me blindfolded for five days… there were days when I was beaten for 20 hours, and sometimes 48 hours… I was hung by my arms and legs and swung four times. men have flogged me…I have confessed more than once under torture.”

The file also contains a letter revealing the threats Ishtiwi suffered during his interrogation by Hamas.

The letter describes how Ishtiwi was taken to an open grave and told that it was his grave.

He was told: “This is your grave. We will pour concrete on you until it reaches your mouth – and it won’t be the first time we do this.

Ibrahim al-Madhoun, a writer with close ties to Hamas, said at the time that Sinwar had used Ishtiwi to establish a sense of power.

Al-Madhoun said: “He is tougher than other leaders – he wants his army to be pure.

“Those in the Qassam are the most important people in Gaza.

“There is a need, they say, to show that these people are not untouchable.”

Sinwar’s early years at Hamas saw a plethora of accusations against his own officials. Initially he focused on the “immorality” in Gaza, but soon turned to insulting anyone he suspected of working with Israel.

In 1989, the feared leader was arrested by Israel and sentenced to life behind bars for his murders.

But he was released in 2011 as part of a deal with Israel in which more than a thousand Palestinian prisoners were exchanged for an Israeli soldier.

Recent documents from the Israeli Shin Bet Intelligence Service revealed the transcripts of more than 150 hours interrogations of Sinwar from the moment he was captured.

In one, Sinwar described strangling a man with a scarf while he was the leader of the Dreaded Hamas ‘security service’, known as Majd.

In another case, Sinwar described the increasing surveillance of a Palestinian named Rasmi Salim after he claimed he had turned his back on Islam and was now working with Israel.

He told his interrogators: “We were driving a white Peugeot, pulled up next to Rasmi, caught him and pushed him into the car.

“We questioned Rasmi and he admitted that he had been in contact with Israeli intelligence, with a man named Abu Rami. He also admitted to bringing girls to his store and messing around with them.

“We took him to the cemetery in Khan Yunis without telling him what we were going to do. I tied his eyes with a cloth so that he could not see, put him in a large grave that I saw, and suffocated him with a cloth I had.

“After I strangled him, I wrapped him in a white cloth and closed the grave. I understood from Rasmi that he realized he deserved to die.”

The documents, first revealed by the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayomsuggest that Sinwar also told investigators that although he had a gun, he preferred to kill with his hands.

It comes as Israel continues its desperate struggle to find Hamas’ leader. after he “dropped off the radar”.

Israeli military leaders have done just that have vowed that their offensive must not end until the terror boss is dead.
