As mentioned earlier, the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge, a primary east-west link in the western suburban area, which was earlier dismantled, will now reopen to the public in February next year. The bridge will be partially opened to the public on February 15, 2024 and will be fully operational in May 2024. During the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, the first girder of this bridge was launched.

The trial run for the launch of the Open Web Girder (OWG) took place on December 1, 2023 when it was pushed four meters towards the track. During this last launch, the entire steel structure was pushed towards the rails and the steel superstructure was aligned with the pillars placed on the ground.

According to a civic official, “The Western Railway has approved an eleven-day traffic blockade for four hours at night. And during this period the girder is taken down every night, an average of 550 millimeters in three hours.”

The Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge was actually dismantled in phases, section by section between December 2022 and March 2023.
