GRUFFALO ADVENTURE: Go to one of the special birthday trails spread across 26 forest locations England celebrating the 25th anniversary of children's favorite The Gruffalo. Each route has five activity panels, sculptures and play areas.

You can pick up an accompanying trail package for €4. Find trails at forestryengland.uk/gruffalo-party-trails.

GET THE BUG BUG: On the hunt for real life small Beasts is always a winner with younger children.

Turn over old tree trunks and piles of leaves and see how many different worms and insects they can discover.

You can take an old jam jar and collect them to take a closer look before placing them safely back in the house.

RUB ON: Arm yourself with a few crayons and some paper during a walk in the nearby forest or park. Then encourage your child to find and rub leaves and other objects. Tree bark and ferns work well.

Scavenger HUNT: This time of year you can also look for snowdrops, daffodils, tree buds and other signs that spring is just around the corner. And make nature spotting more fun for children by creating a scavenger hunt.

You can make your own list or there is a free printable scavenger hunt at hobbycraft.co.uk.

WET WEATHER: Don't let a little drizzle keep you from going out.

Put on a pair of boots and rain gear and you'll find that puddle jumping offers little ones an afternoon of entertainment.
