Nine people aboard a U.S. Navy P-8A aircraft swam to safety Monday afternoon after their plane overran the runway and crashed into the sea while landing in Hawaii.

First responders from Honolulu rushed to the scene, but there were no reports of injuries.

Artillery Sgt. Orlando Perez said the plane was a Poseidon, a reconnaissance plane used in intelligence gathering.

It was pictured floating in Kaneohe Bay, near the Hawaii Naval Base. The fuselage appeared intact, indicating that the aircraft ended up in the sea at low speed.

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) issued the first alert for a “probable aircraft fire incident” just after 2 p.m., according to KITV.

The P-8A is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the 737 commercial airliner.

The plane crash was reported around 2 p.m. local time, off the coast of O’ahu
