Jenna Ortega will reportedly not return for the seventh installment of the Scream franchise.

Deadline has reported that Ortega’s departure from the Scream film was already in talks prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

The outlet reports that the script for the sequel is not yet complete and that Jenna will head to Ireland in April to film season two on Wednesday. That shoot is expected to take place in the summer.

Deadline reports that her departure has nothing to do with the recent firing of co-star Melissa Barrera over reports of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Melissa was fired from the upcoming Scream VII after sharing a series of pro-Palestine posts on her social media accounts.

Jenna Ortega will reportedly not return for the seventh installment of the Scream franchise

The 33-year-old actress, who starred in the last two films in the horror franchise and was set to film the next, has been dropped by production company Spyglass after they say she “crossed the line into hate speech.”

The Mexican star posted a series of comments on her Instagram account amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, including one in which she said Gaza was being “treated like a concentration camp,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In the same post, she asked if “people haven’t learned from our history” and said, “This is genocide. This is ethnic cleansing.”

The actress, who played Sam Carpenter in the franchise, labeled Israel a “colonized” country and posted content with an anti-Semitic trope about Jewish people controlling the media.

One message read: ‘Western media only shows the [Israeli] side. Why do they do that, I’ll let you figure it out for yourself.’

A spokesperson for Spyglass released a statement Variety in which she explained why Barerra was let go from the film because of her comments.

‘Spyglass’ position is unequivocally clear: we have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism or incitement to hatred in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortion of the Holocaust or anything that blatantly crosses the line of hate speech,” the spokesperson said.

According to The Hollywood ReporterBarrera said in another Instagram Stories post that “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp.”

Barrera posted a number of war-related clips to her Instagram Stories on Monday, including footage of US-Israeli forces in Gaza; demonstrations in favor of a ceasefire in Philadelphia; and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib called for an immediate ceasefire.

Barrera played a key role in both hit horror films, as 2022’s Scream earned $137.7 million in box office revenue worldwide, while Scream V, released last March, raked in a total of $168.9.

Director Christopher Landon, who has signed on to make the upcoming film, distances himself from the decision, saying, “Everything sucks. Stop shouting. This wasn’t my decision.’

Barerra, who is considered a rising star in Hollywood, has not yet spoken out about the decision, but posted a message on her Instagram that read, “Ultimately, I would rather be excluded because of who I involve. than to be included for those whom I exclude.”

The actress attended the prestigious Ticsh art school in New York and landed a role in the American TV drama Vida in 2018.

She got her big break in 2020 when she was cast as Sam in the revival of the Scream franchise. The film was released in 2022 and she appeared in the sequel, which was released this year.

Although filming has yet to begin on the next film in the franchise due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, she was expected to reprise her role.

A number of Barerra’s fans chimed in in the comments section of a post she made on September 16, supporting her amid news of her scuttling Scream role.

One fan said: ‘We stand with you queen and we will boycott scream 7.’

Another fan commented, “Thank you for being brave enough to care! I know I and others will continue to support you!’

One fan said: ‘Please tell me it’s not true that you’re being let go from Scream VII? How could they let you go because you called for a ceasefire?’

Production on Scream VII has not yet begun, THR reports. Paramount is expected to distribute the film.

The film’s development was “slow amid the actors’ and writers’ strikes,” the newspaper said.

The issue has affected the employment of others in show business, as Variety reported that Tom Cruise intervened in a situation with his agent Maha Dakhil at CAA.

Dakhil, an agent at the Hollywood powerhouse, was fired from her position on the board of the agency’s film division after posting about the war: ‘What could be more heartbreaking than witnessing genocide? Witnessing the denial that genocide is happening.”

Cruise, 61, “took the rare step of personally showing support for his embattled agent” on Nov. 15 at the CAA offices in Los Angeles, an insider told the outlet.

Sources told him that ‘a group of CAA assistants threatened to walk out’ because 48-year-old Dakhil was ‘arrested by management’, but they did not follow through; Other agents angered by Dakhil’s posts were left “disillusioned” after she was allowed to keep her position as an agent at the company.

DailyMail.com has contacted representatives for Barerra and Spyglass for further comment on the story.
