Officers were called to the Junction Street clinic in Nowra, on the state’s south coast, after a 34-year-old patient reportedly pulled out a gun at around 1pm on Wednesday.

He was shot before being treated by paramedics and police, but he died at the scene.

Deputy Commissioner Peter Cotter said the patient was a regular at the medical center and became ‘extremely agitated’ while speaking to a doctor.

“During that conversation, he pulled out a firearm for no reason,” Cotter said.

The man left the clinic and picked up a police officer’s shield before raising his gun “in the air and at the police.”

“The police fired a number of shots,” Cotter said. “He was hit several times.”

The man was known to police for his mental health problems and not for his criminal background.

A team from the police homicide unit will investigate the circumstances leading to the death.

The investigation will also be subject to an independent review.

Road closures have been put in place and police have asked the public to avoid the area.
