Nicolas Cage wants to stop filming after ‘3 or 4 films’

After a long film career Nicolas Cage is getting ready to explore new sides of his profession.

“I feel like, at this point – after 45 years of doing this… I feel like I’ve pretty much said what I had to say about cinema,” Cage, 59, explained in an interview with Uproxx published on Monday 4 December. “And I’d like to leave on a positive note and say, ‘Adios.’ I think I might have to do three or four more films before I can get there, and then hopefully switch formats and find a different way to express my acting.

The National treasure actor further said that he would have quit acting after the filming Dream scenariowhich premiered in November, but there are “other contracts that [he has] to fulfill.”

“I mean, I will be very strict and strict in the further selection process. But if I want to make another film, I want to explore other formats,” he told the outlet, noting that he is interested in making “immersion streaming with episodic television” part of his resume.

“I’ve seen things that can be done now with characters and the time they get to express themselves,” he continued. ” I saw Bryan Cranston staring at a suitcase for an hour in an episode of Break bad. We don’t have time for that in a feature film, so maybe television is the best next step for me.”

After putting the film behind him, Cage wants to focus on spending quality time with his family. The actor shares son Weston 32, with ex Christina FultonKal-El, 18, with ex-wife Alice Kim and 15-month-old daughter August with wife Riko Shibata.

“I’ll be 60 next month and my father died at 75. So if I’m lucky I’ll have more years than him, but I don’t know,” Cage said. “What is important is that my children and I have a daughter. And if I can find an episodic show that stays in one place where I don’t have to keep leaving, we can all be together. That would be great on a personal level.”

This isn’t the first time Cage has brought up his retirement plans. In April 2018, the actor shared that he wants to focus more on other endeavors besides acting.

“Directing is something I look forward to later,” he revealed at a press conference while promoting his film Primalper The explosion. “Right now I’m mainly a film artist and I’ll continue to do that for another three or four years. I would like to concentrate more on directing.”

Cage recently made headlines with his performance in the 2023 comedy-horror film Dream scenario, which follows a college professor who begins appearing in strangers’ dreams. The film – which co-stars Dylan Gelula, Julianne Nicholson, Lily Gao, Noah Centineo And Michael Cera – grossed approximately $220,000 during an initial limited weekend opening to critical acclaim.
