There are rumors that NOTHING will launch a cheaper version of its Phone 2 soon.

The Carl Pei-led company took its time to address the issues with its Phone 1 and launched Phone 2 in 2023, with Nothing focusing on a premium price and adding improvements for a better experience.

But at a higher price, it didn't deliver the same value for money as other budget Android phones.

But a new leak suggests the new device could see a welcome price drop.

While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, here's what the leaks and rumors indicate.

Design and specifications

None of the first two phones stood out thanks to their Glyph lighting design on the back.

Pictures of the Phone 2a have been leaked, but these are of a PVT unit and don't show the final design.

These images indicate that the cameras may get a vertical layout and be placed in the center, which is different from the Phone 2 where the dual cameras are placed horizontally in the top left corner.

There are rumors that the iconic Glyph could be dropped to cut costs.

However, others have said that the Phone 2a may be redesigned, with the Glyph lights reduced in size.

Even with the downsized LED lights, the device still offers controls similar to those of Phone 2, reports suggest.

Reports also say that Nothing could use a Visionix and BOE-supplied 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED panel on its new phone, but there's no word yet on specific specs.

The phone is thought to be paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

A leak of SmartPrix indicates that the Nothing Phone 2a will feature dual 50MP rear cameras.

Nothing will supposedly use a 1/1.5-inch 50MP Samsung S5KGM9 shooter for the primary camera, while a 50MP 1/2.76-inch 0.6μm Samsung S5KJN1 sensor will handle the ultra-wide duty.

It is also speculated that Nothing could use the 32MP SonyIMX615 sensor for selfies.

Details about the phone's battery capacity have not been leaked so far, other than the website Android Police suggests that with a 6.7-inch screen, it will have a 4,500mAh to 4,800mAh cell, giving all-day battery life.

Software

In addition to its unique design, the company has also made a name for itself with its Nothing OS 2 experience.

The expectation is that the Phone 2a will continue with this.

The device will apparently launch with Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5 and offer almost the same experience as its more expensive sibling.

Price and release date

With Phone 2a, Nothing aims for a lower price point than Phone 2, which will allow it to reach more customers, especially in a price-conscious market.

Rumors indicate that the Nothing Phone 2a will cost around €349, so around £300, making it more affordable than the Phone 2.

Leaks suggest that the Nothing Phone 2a could make its debut at MWC 2024, which is scheduled for February 26-29, 2024.

Nothing is thought to be developing four variants of the Phone 2a, with the company seemingly planning to release the phone in more markets.

The competition

If the rumored £300 price tag is true, the Nothing Phone 2a will face stiff competition from the likes of Samsung and Google.

Both the Samsung Galaxy A54 and the Google Pixel 7a have excellent screen and image performance.

These phones usually cost £392 ($500), but are often discounted.

While the Nothing Phone 2a may not be able to match the same photo quality, the rumored MediaTek SoC should help it deliver better performance.

The Phone 2a could become a great alternative to both brands.

It is thought that the Nothing Phone 2a could feature a redesigned back with reduced Glyph lights
