As winter approaches, we are all preparing for the cold and dark days ahead and trying to save our pennies where we can.

This can be a particularly difficult time for older people, especially given the ongoing cost of living crisis in Britain.

To make things easier, a popular supermarket cafe is launching a £1 meal deal to help the most vulnerable stay warm and fed.

Asda has reintroduced its ‘Winter Warmer’ program for the 60s as it continues to face increasing financial pressure.

People aged 60 and over can enjoy soup, a sandwich and unlimited tea and coffee for just £1 at one of Asda’s 205 cafes. The initiative started on November 1 and will run until the end of February.

Asda has scaled back its ‘Winter Warmer’ program for the over 60s as they continue to face increasing financial pressure

The retailer first launched the Winter Warmer program in November 2022 for a two-month period, in an effort to support older customers who were disproportionately affected by the rising cost of living.

It came as 65 to 74 year olds experienced a £163 annual drop in their disposable income.

More than 650,000 £1 soup meals were served, prompting Asda to extend the program for longer this year, until February 28, 2024.

The offer is available all day, every day and runs alongside the Kids Eat for £1 offer, which remains hugely popular, with over 2.6 million meals served since its launch in June 2022, and over 180,000 in the last four weeks. only.

Asda also revealed that according to their income gauge, 40% of households on the lowest incomes are still experiencing negative disposable income in September – meaning their income doesn’t cover what they need to spend on bills and other essentials.

Kris Comerford, Asda’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: ‘We know winter will be incredibly tough for thousands of retirees as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and a steady income.

‘Last year we served more than 650,000 meals to people over 60 in two months. By bringing the initiative back to 2023 and extending it until February, we hope it will have a similar impact on those who need it most during the winter months.”

Select Asda stores are also running a ‘Community Cuppa’ campaign in their cafes, creating space for community groups that may otherwise find it difficult to meet due to rental costs or high energy costs.

Places are available on weekdays in November and December from 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. All community group members who visit will receive unlimited free tea and coffee. For more information, please contact your local store.

The Winter Warmer deal comes after the supermarket unveiled its 2023 Christmas advert, featuring the king of the festive season himself, Michael Bublé.

The Canadian singer heads off stage to join the British retailer as the supermarket’s new Chief Quality Officer in the clip shot by Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi.

Michael makes the rounds behind the scenes at ASDA ensuring quality remains high for customers across the country, hilariously referring to maple pigs and blankets as ‘so last year’.

The fun advert competes with other retailers such as Debenhams, Morrisons and Sainsburys to win the hearts of Brits this year.
