Six missed chances to snare Valdo Calocane before killing three in Nottingham – including a visit to MI5 and a police raid

Police have admitted there were six missed opportunities to snare a knifeman who murdered three people on the streets of Nottingham.

Valdo Calocane was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia when he 'brutally' stabbed students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, in the early hours of June 13 last year.

He also fatally stabbed a 65-year-old Ian Coates before stealing his van and driving into pedestrians.

Calocane has admitted three counts of manslaughter and three counts of attempted murder after hitting three other pedestrians with a van he stole from Mr Coates.

Before his condemnationNottinghamshire Police said there were missed opportunities to stop Calocane.

Officers said there were a “number of occasions” between 2020 and 2022 where they had had contact with the triple murderer.

Spring 2020

In the spring in 2020, Calocane, 32, allegedly followed a female student to her accommodation and threatened her.

She was so scared that she jumped out of the window to escape.

It is believed that the university made spiritual search efforts during the same period health take care of the killer.

He was also arrested for criminal damage after smashing a door to his flat.

Calocane was told to take antipsychotic medication during which time he should have remained under supervision.

Summer 2020

He then allegedly broke into a neighbor's apartment and threatened the residents summer of 2020.

He was kept in hospital under the Mental health Action.

The missed opportunities to stop Calocane

July 2020 – He allegedly broke into the neighbors' apartment and threatened the residents. He was held in hospital under the Mental Health Act until the end of that month.

May 2021 – Calocane visits MI5 and asks them to stop “controlling him”. His photo is taken at their headquarters in London.

September 2021 – Calocane is covered by the Mental Health Act, but attacks a police officer on the way to hospital. He fails to attend court and a warrant is issued for his arrest.

January 2022 – The police were called after Calocane got into a fight with a roommate over a dirty kitchen.

February 2022 – He assaulted a roommate and had his college residency terminated. He received no further action from the police.

May 2021

Visited Calocane MI5 in May 2021 and asked them to stop “controlling him.”

His photo was taken at their London headquarters.

Calocane's lawyer Peter Joyce KC said: “He (Calocane) tried to surrender to MI5 at their headquarters to prevent them from controlling him. That is not a fabrication of his.

“A photo was taken by their systems at Thames House, saying 'please arrest me' – basically 'stop checking me'.”

September 2021

In September 2021 he was covered by the Mental Health Act, but on the way to hospital he attacked a police officer.

Calocane was not present later court and a warrant was issued to gain access to his flat where seven months' worth of unused medication was found.

January 2022

The police were also called Calocane attacked a housemate in a row because of a dirty kitchen in January 2022.

Pals told how violence broke out when he was an adult Student Calocane snapped when asked to collect the dirty laundry from the apartment.

The clip shows Chris frantically begging roommates to “call the police” and shouting “Valdo, get off me” during the attack at Rayleigh Park halls in March 2022.

Officers arrived on the scene and escorted Calocane away – before university officials insisted he not face charges.

Instead, the potential murderer was offered mental health support to enable him to complete his mechanical engineering studies last summer.

February 2022

Finally, in February 2022, he assaulted a roommate and had his university residence terminated, but received no further action from police.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin admitted: “We should have done more to arrest him.”

The officer continued: “Due to the circumstances existing at the time of the alleged assault, it is, in my view, highly unlikely that he would have received a custodial sentence.

“Of course, an arrest may have initiated a route back to mental health services, but as we have seen from his previous encounters with those services, it seems unlikely that he would have engaged in this process.”

Calocane began its rampage just after 4am on June 13 as Grace and Barnaby were walking back to their halls after a night out.

The killer attacked after lurking in the shadows and began stabbing Barnaby with a dagger.

As he fell to the ground, Grace showed “incredible courage” in trying to fight off the killer.

She managed to push the rampaging Calocane onto the road, but this caused him to turn his attention to her.

Calocane was then seen walking away “calmly” as he continued his horrific attack when he came across Ian.

After stabbing the father to death, Calocane stole his van and rammed three pedestrians with it, injuring Sharon Miller, Marcin Gawronski and Wayne Birkett.
