Vodafone hit by new outage

Vodafone customers were left without broadband and mobile data at home this afternoon.

According to DownDetector, more than 1,400 users reported issues today.

Most reports focus on home broadband and carrier mobile network services.

How to test your internet speed

There are numerous online tools you can use to test your internet speed.

But perhaps the most popular is Speedtest.net from Ookla (an American data company), which you can find here.

You can also download the app here:

It tests your speeds in a number of ways using local servers, giving you a fairly accurate representation of your download speeds in the real world.

Please note that if you are testing mobile, make sure you are connected to WiFi to test the broadband speed. Otherwise, check your mobile speeds instead.

Vodafone is investigating the problem

Vodafone has noted the widespread problems experienced by its customers and says the outages are being investigated.

In a response to one of the many complaints about the mobile network on social media, the telecom provider said “we are working to resolve this as soon as possible”.

“We are aware that some customers may occasionally experience issues using mobile data. You can still use messaging and voice services,” Vodafone said on possibly operational.”

A handy broadband speed guide

It can be difficult to know what speed your broadband needs, but it's more important than ever to have the right speed for you.

With that in mind, here's a handy guide to broadband speeds:

  • 0.5 megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed
  • 1.5 megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed
  • 3 megabits per second – Recommended for SD quality
  • 5 megabits per second – Recommended for HD quality
  • 25 megabits per second – Recommended for 4K quality

Will a refund be available?

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience problems with your internet, calling or mobile services.

Internet companies usually pay £8 for each day that broadband and home phone services are not repaired after two full days without service.

They will also pay £25 for each missed appointment, or for appointments canceled with less than 24 hours notice.

In addition, you will receive £5 for each calendar day of delay until the start of the new service. This usually happens automatically.

If you are a mobile customer experiencing a lack of service, you may be entitled to a refund or account credit, depending on the circumstances.

Can you check Vodafone's network status?

The network has a service checker on its website where you can find out if there are any issues in your area or just a problem with your device.

You can also subscribe to receive alerts so you know if there are any issues and how Vodafone is solving them.

On the same page you will also find advice and guidance on what to do if you encounter problems.

For Vodafone broadband users, there is a separate page on what to do if you have slow speeds, internet cuts or can't connect at all.
