Why is Britney Spears and Sam Asghari's divorce still ongoing?
Britney Spears'ex Sam Asghari seems to be living his best life since his divorce from the superstar. On January 8, he posed for red carpet photos at the Young Hollywood & the Breakout Stars of 2023 event in LA, and three days later American sun reported that he mentioned Spears to take a photo with Brad Pitt at a gallery exhibition in Beverly Hills.
The “Toxic” singer isn't exactly happy that Asghari is still using his connection with her to secure invites to industry events and connect with Hollywood's elite. “She feels that Sam is the 'Mr. Britney Spears' card for all it's worth,” says a source, “and she thinks it's kind of sad.”
It's been especially difficult for Spears, 42, as she and Asghari are currently feuding over the details of their divorce. The former trainer, 29, filed for divorce in August 2023 after 14 months of marriage. If Us previously reported, Spears and Asghari signed a rock-solid prenup before tying the knot in June 2022, but now sources claim Asghari wants more money.
“Sam believes he should be properly compensated for everything he went through with Britney,” the source said, referring to the erratic behavior and mood swings Asghari witnessed while marrying the pop star. “The exact amount he wants is being kept secret, but he is not happy with what Britney and her team have proposed.” Adds a second source: “Sam will go for anything under the sun.” Representatives for Spears declined to comment on the divorce proceedings. A representative for Asghari did not respond to a request for comment.
A source said Us in July 2022 that, under the terms of their prenup, Asghari would receive $1 million for every two years of marriage to Spears, while relinquishing his rights to the Grammy winner's music catalog and signing a non-disclosure agreement. (She is worth an estimated $60 million.) But the settlement is “in limbo,” the first source says. “It's a lot of hassle back and forth. Things have become much more complicated than either of them had hoped.”
While Spears reportedly paid for the rent of Asghari's luxury apartment after their split, a third source says Us that is no longer the case. “Britney is in no mood to be pushed or rushed into handing another big check to Sam,” the first source says, noting that so far she's not budging when it comes to the terms of their prenup. “She wants to stick to the letter of the paperwork and believes this is the only thing he is entitled to, period.”

It's a sore subject for the star. In 2022, Spears' legal team claimed her father: Jamie, paid herself at least $6 million while acting as her conservator and spent more than $30 million of her earnings on legal fees related to the 13-year conservatorship. “Britney is still deeply resentful about the amount of money certain family members have managed to take from her over the years,” the first source said. After her divorce in 2007 from Kevin FederlineSpears reportedly paid the former backup dancer $1.3 million, and he receives $40,000 a month from her in child support for their two sons, Sean, 18, and Jayden, 17, who live with him in Hawaii.
“Sam wishes Britney well, but wants what is fair,” a source said of Asghari pushing for more money.
MEGANow Asghari believes he is entitled to more than he initially agreed to. “Sam doesn't want money, but he's willing to put in the effort and fight for the extra money he thinks he deserves,” the first source said. An insider said Us in January 2023 that Spears was “emotionally abusive” and could be “cruel” toward Asghari, often taking out her stress on him. The insider said she also blamed Asghari for their miscarriage in May 2022, telling him she “lost the baby because he was never home.”
Things seemed amicable enough when Spears and Asghari announced their split in August. “We will hold on to the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always,” he wrote in an Instagram statement. Spears confirmed the breakup a few days later, telling fans via social media that she was “a little shocked” but doing “pretty damn well.” She added: “I'm not here to explain why because it's honestly no one's business.”
