Aaron Rodgers cleared the air on whether or not he brought a bong to a recent New York Jets game.
“That wasn’t a hookah in the first place,” Rodgers, 39, said during a Friday, Nov. 10, “Pat McAfee Show” appearance. “I walked off the field with my Maestro Dobel Tequila [ESPN Deportes sideline reporter] John Sutcliffe gives me every time he sees me on Monday Night Football.
The quarterback explained as he was getting ready to leave the turf on Thursday, November 9, he “heard a British man shouting his name,” which turned out to be his friend. Hugh Coles. After Rodgers went to Coles, 31, to say hello, he ended up dropping the uniquely shaped bottle.
“I see Hugh, give him a hug, pat him down, go to pick him up again, he falls out and I lose half my tequila,” he shared. “So shout out to John for bringing me tequila, shout out to Maestro Dobel, shout out to Hugh, shout out to bongs everywhere, but that wasn’t one of them.”
A video of Rodgers dropping the item went viral and set the internet ablaze with theories. While many users believed the athlete had taken a bong onto the field, Rodgers expressed disappointment that the guesses were not more creative.
“It’s a little weak as far as the conspiracies go,” Rodgers joked Friday. “I feel like it should have been something more, like dolphin sperm or giant tears or something better than that.”
For his part, Sutcliffe confirmed Rodgers’ story with a post of his own.
“We arrived in New York 🗽, and I had to see my friend @AaronRodgers12 to shout Moooooonday Niiiight football together and give him a gift @maestrodobelmx @dobeltequila,” the sports reporter wrote in Spanish alongside a video of him and Rogers which was shared via X on Monday, Nov. 6.
Rodgers’ first season with the Jets got off to a rocky start. In the first match at MetLife Stadium of the 2023 season in September, the footballer suffered an ankle injury. It was later confirmed that Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon.
“Thank you to everyone who reached out, called, texted, contacted, connected through a friend, etc. It meant a lot to me, and I’ll try to get back to you all soon 🥹❤️,” wrote he on September 13 via Instagram, breaking his silence on what appeared to be a season-ending injury. “I am heartbroken and going through all the emotions, but deeply touched and humbled by the support and love. 💔.”
Earlier this week, Rodgers said he was making progress on his return to the field, sooner rather than later. While chatting with Derwin James, the Los Angeles Chargers safety, 27, asked Rodgers when he planned to return. Rodgers patted James on the back and joked, “Give me a few weeks.”
